Default Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Tuna!

I just looked at the weather and SST reports and next week looks VERY doable! Anyone else goin' out these days? Marty, Sea Jypsea, TWB, Mark? Anyone? Let the killing begin! Lets hope that fuel prices don't get so high that tuna trips get curtailed! I am ready for another adventure!

Did anyone do any good this weekend?
Looking at the SST it looks like a long ride to warm water.
I'm working on a plan so that maybe I can be there, what time are you leaving? Where do you stay?

I'll e-mail you with phone #s

If the weather holds I will be going out at 0600 from Depoe Bay. My last outing was at the same area (around tuna town) so that is not a problem...ocean conditions can be! I have full crews for Wednesday and Thursday and hope for good news. I will be on 78 after I am on the ocean and hope to have a lot of company! Tuesday I am going to go chinook fishing with the wife. and keeping the day relatively short.

Edsr did well today, but had to run a LONG ways out to get 'em--like 45 -47 miles long!
125.40 West I believe, 44 somethin' North.
Long ways right now, but that could change soon.

If they come to within 35 miles again, I'll begin making runs out again. It's just not worth the fuel consumption at over $2.00/gallon for me to go further than that, aside from the fact that my tank capacity limits me to about that range to have much time to fish.

I might be in for Thursday depending on the weather and a market for the fish(need to make some money to pay for all these repairs), oh yeah, and my ability to get the boat up and running(I guess that's important too?).

Just got off the phone with Marty, he will be home tomorrow and will post a complete report.
He said they were 57 miles out of Depoe at 45 05.
They had 38 fish, I think. Not much in between.

Ray, right now there is cold water off of Newport, and not much fish, however that could change as the week goes on. The Irish had a good catch down off Heceta Head Saturday.

I don't want to go that far in my boat, 45 is about my limit.

TWB,

I was down there while he was talking to you. He wrote the info down for me just in case anyone was going tomorrow.

38 fish. 51.3 nautical miles out from Depoe. 290 degree heading. 62.3 degrees water temp.

45 04.88
125 10.99

45 05.14
125 10.62

Lots of jumpers and boiling fish after small bait.

That's what he wrote down for you guys. Now what little I might have retained from the conversation:

Couldn't find any tuna elswhere. 62 degree water but no breaks, fish, bait, etc. Ocean improved and it was a beautiful day out there. Mostly scratch fishing but did get some by throwing a jig (can't remember the name) but is a small lead fish that sounded similar to a dart or cripled herring to me.

That's about it. Puffin came in while I was talking to Marty probably around 9:30ish and I thought it was WP. Went over to the boat ramp and found out it was Puffin and friends. They didn't end up in the right area and ended up with two fish.

Talked to Puffin's friend while Puffin was pulling the boat out and he was very upbeat and expressed what a great day it was out there. Didn't seem disapointed a bit and commented that everybody had a freezer full already and plenty canned stock. Just the way it goes sometimes he said and I could tell that even though the catchin' wasn't great, the fishin' was.

Woops....got the mileage wrong....well that's 5.7 miles closer, getting better all the time.

DBD, thanks for the report and the help with the message.

Ray, I didn't think about the Columbia, Hmm? 2/1/2 hour drive for me to launch, fish at 35 miles. Your right, decisions....decisions..?

hmmmm, in looking at the latest temp charts, I'd guess that there is tuna water up north further inside...but that's strictly a Wild A** Guess. My main inclination would be to fish the 44 55 line starting around 124 25 and heading due west clear out to 124 40 or so. Hard to say though without being out there, but looking at the evening SST chart, you've got about a 3 degree temp change along that line in areas.

If things hold as is, and all is looking good once I get the new prop on the boat tomorrow, I may be convinced to make a run around thursday.

My tentative plan A is to depart Depoe Bay with the pack Thursday.
I am hoping that you all don't mind. I am new to Tuna fishing and I have not piloted out of Depoe Bay before.
If I get just one Tuna on my boat I will tie my all time record and have first Tuna blood on Sea Lion. That would be a beautiful thing.
I am taking some more first time Halibut fishermen out of Newport Friday so I would like to get back in time to deal with the boat and the carking.
Have radar, will travel....
Oh yea, and a new Tuna arsenal ready to deploy.
Now how does that warm water dance go again...

Gentlemen.........Dan gave a good report of our tuna trip on Sunday. We went a 140 mile round trip for 38 fish. All fish were a very good with few fish under 20 lbs. The area that we fished had jumpers and finners in almost every direction. The were feeding on small 2" sauries and when we scaled back on the size of the jigs we were pulling, it seemed to help with getting bit. As we were trolling we put someone on the bow with a casting rod and when there were blowups within range, we would cast into the boils and get bit every time. We used a lure called a Mega Bait. We got lucky as the weather was a little bumpy going out, but once we got past the 125 line it layed down to near perfect conditions.

The area that we fished was 45 03 to 45 06, and 125 06 to 125 12. On the way out we found no other areas that had fish.

Also, during the course of our day, the fish were moving gradually north. I think that there were so many fish they would eat the bait supply up and went looking for more. The fins on the tuna were all chewed up on most of the fish we caught. Which means it was a pretty big school of tuna, as they frequently herd together for protection or ??? and their fins come in contact with each other and it breaks the tails down. Next time you catch some tuna look at their tails. Other fish had perfectly formed tails and were for the most part loners or traveling in small groups, and were for the most part the bigger tuna. Our largest was about 36 lbs.

I have to work for 3 or 4 days, so I know the weather will be perfect for those of you that will be hunting.

Good luck and be safe.......50 miles is a long run.

Marty, thanks for the phone call and the report, I no that you must have been tired.

Ok, I'm in for Thursday out of Depoe, that day works best for me. Probably will be in my boat or in a friends brand new 24' Trophy, don't know quite yet?

Latest forcast looks better now than it did last night. Calling for 15kts now instead of 25 afternoon winds, and a 4ft. swell. "Subject to change."

Hope to see all of you Thursday,
Jerry

I like the trend but the warm water looks to be further North like 126 44....

Time for some lessons from you experienced Tuna hunters.

What do you recomend for Thursday?

I don't like the tides in Astoria or Garabaldi for that matter and was hoping to get out of Depoe. I think the Ocean will cooperate but will the fish be inside my range?

I'm thinking 140 miles round trip max. I can likely do more but I want to have a large margin of safety to insure my departure and return ratio equals 1 when the day is done.

I am also new to this port and know nothing about the bottom fishing or Chinook spots as an alternate plan. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Feel free to email me if you would prefer.

Thanks in advance,

I was talking to Dave on the Enterpise out of Depoe Bay yesterday (I
fished with both Dave and Jurgen (tacklebuster) on Saturday) and he told me
that the boats were just hammering the TUNA! on the Hecata Banks. One 12
hour charter boat with 6 passengers had over 100 TUNA!!!! Dave was
preparing to take the Enterprise out on a 3 day commercial tuna trip
starting Wed. Hopefully I will get to talk to him on Friday when I get
out there!

With all the talk lately of Heceta Banks, is it possible to launch out of Waldport or Florence to reduce the mileage and ease the comfort of the trip?

I know absolutely nothing about those two ports but would be interested to fish Heceta for the first time if anyone else wants to make the run.

Anyone?

I think launching out of Waldport (Alsea Bay) would be like launching out of Siletz, Nestucca or Netarts Bay.

Wouldn't reccomend it unless it is a flat calm day and I still wouldn't reccomend it.

I believe there is a charter and commercials that fish out of Florence and you could call Bill Pickney at the Sportsman in Florence @ (541) 997-3336

Thanks fellas. I wouldn't attempt it in anything other than the dory, knowing that there is a lot of shallow water and breakers.

I definately am not making the run without someone with some local knowledge on the wing as well.

I would like to learn some "new" ports though just for fun. Coos Bay is on the list of new areas to try someday.

Too many ports.......so little time!

Rod, Florence is considered a navigable entrance while Waldport is not (unless you're KUJO). The Siuslaw river bar is known to shift around a lot. You don't want to be there when the big swells start up. Local knowledge is pretty important there. The mouth is a long way from the ramps in Florence, so if it got socked in with fog a non-local would be hosed. All that being said, as long as there's no big swell it would be quite do-able. You'd for sure want to have a plotter, and mark a whole bunch of waypoints on the way downriver.
