Default Late Fri Report - Newport Hali

Just got home; haven't unpacked yet or had dinner but wanted to get a quick report for those who need it for Sat AM.

Weather was great; no wind, slick over a 4/5 ft swell. Started at the rockpile. Got into lings & yellowtail rockfish & even a skate, but couldn't buy a halibut. Pilar had one hog & a few shakers; report of a few other fish at the south end. We pulled the plug & ran to the chicken ranch. Got our 4 fish there in reasonable time. Although no wind, there was a fairly strong current to the SW. At the ranch, Popeye had a big shark take several huge bites out of a hali right at the boat. He held it up & it truly looked like Swiss cheese.

We had hoped to run north & chase tuna, but time was running out for that. Talked to one boat that was headed towards the warm water at nelsons island. He got 5/6 miles N of chicken ranch & saw jumpers. Didn't hook any last I spoke w/him.

Back to the rockpile for a chance at salmon. By then Pilar had his box plugged with 5 or 6 big salmon. He was really true to form today. We got one nice king in about 15 minutes of trolling & called it quits.

Bring plenty of nice herring for both buts & salmon; that seems to be what they wanted today.

Good luck tomorrow y'all..........

Areyou guys going out of Depot tomorrow morning and if so what time are you going out. The weather report actually was posted as being worse than it was projected the other day. I was thinking about leaving at about 2 am and making a run from Tigard down to visit and get the boat out for a run. I was really hoping to try for Tuna and would like it tag along if possible.

Ok here is the rest of the story. That picture of Dean fighting a fish is a 65 pound plus halibut that hit a herring we were mooching about 20 cranks off the bottom, AFTER we had already got our limit of butts  that is a light action salmon rod with 30LB test line, him and Joe had to tag team that one. Later in the day we went to the north end of the pile and tried to get into some lingcod, I was jigging a 4oz jighead with a motor oil colored rubber wormy thing and bang I hook into something that is screaming line off my reel  I finally had to put the thumb to it or lose it all, I stopped the fish and started gaining line, About 15 minutes later here comes a 40" plus butt I got this on a Berkley Air IM7 10-20 with 40 LB line on it. All in all we got 3 acidental Halibut that we had to let go, 2 of the 3 were bigger than my 48" keeper. I did manage 1 27" Ling and a small chinook. What a great day. Thanks again Dean.
Here is Joe and me with the goods

Thanks for posting the pictures Tim....nice to see you are still suckin up a little.. You forgot to mention that Joe ate all the lunch meat. It was a great day out there with good company and I just realized from the pics that we did a 3-banger. Was a pleasure having you aboard (even though I don't know you)..and thanks for helping clean the catch.
