Whew, sorry for the short post. Had some things to do...
The whole story...
My day started out bad. Was woke up a half-hour early to learn my office had been broken into. Bunch of stuff stolen. Not an easy thing to deal with when you're half asleep and you have people on their way to go fishing. Figured I wouldn't be much help at work, so proceeded with the day's plans.
3/4's of the way to PO, my nephew realized he'd forgotten his fishing license (one-day non-resident). After a very short deliberation, turned around and headed back. So much for the early start, but I wanted him participating in the mayhem. At this point, I'm wondering what could possibly go wrong next...
We had our halibut by 10am, so we decided to head NW to see how close the tuna water was. 8 miles later, we had 61.5 deg water. Dropped our lines, and within 5 minutes had two fish in the boat. 5 minutes later, we had two more. I didn't pack very much ice, as this was to be a scouting trip at most (I'd presumed the boys would be pukey, so hadn't anticipated a 'hard-core' approach).
We spun back around hoping to pick up one or two more. Found three schools within 200' of each other jumping all over. Drug our rigging around one school. One sport rod doubled over. I held our speed. Then a handline went tout. Then the other sport rod doubled over. Before I could kill the engine, the other handline went full-stretch. A quad! Disorganized mayhem at this point. We ended up with both sport rods tangled with one of the handlines. Tuff-line is messy stuff huh?
We ended up getting 3 of the 4. I don't even remember what happened to the 4th...We decided to just drop two handlines and head for home. As my bro-in-law started letting out the handline, he got hammered about 15' behind the boat. Fortunately for him, it broke the leader and he didn't lose any fingers. Crazy!
Unfortunately, we didn't know it broke the leader till we pulled the line in 15 minutes later and headed for home.
These guys were as newbie as they come. A couple of one-day fishing trips chasing planter-trout for experience. They really stepped up to the challenge, especially considering what they were having to endure.
There was no favorite color or lure. Fish were caught on Root Beer, Zuchini, Green/White and Black/Purple.
Their belly's were full of little fish, maybe 2" long.
For a day that started out horrible, it ended up pretty darn good.
I'm taking a more seasoned crew tomorrow. I think we're gonna ice up heavy and head straight to tuna town. Not sure if it'll be PO or Charleston though. Will make that call at 0430. OMG, I've got to get to bed!
I'm so tired...
