Default PO Report

Well, we got out. Butt fishing was good. Ocean was good. Headed 8 miles NW of halibut hill and tuna were everywhere. We didn't bring enough ice to handle any more.

My brother-in-law and nephew both puked....alot.

They weathered the storm though and are taking lots of fish back home with them.

I might be hitting Charleston in the morning from what I'm hearing.

Beautiful! Not you, the fish.

That's a great catch for a lucky crew. Good on 'em for toughing it out. What was the hot setup and colors?

Whew, sorry for the short post. Had some things to do...

The whole story...
My day started out bad. Was woke up a half-hour early to learn my office had been broken into. Bunch of stuff stolen. Not an easy thing to deal with when you're half asleep and you have people on their way to go fishing. Figured I wouldn't be much help at work, so proceeded with the day's plans.
3/4's of the way to PO, my nephew realized he'd forgotten his fishing license (one-day non-resident). After a very short deliberation, turned around and headed back. So much for the early start, but I wanted him participating in the mayhem. At this point, I'm wondering what could possibly go wrong next...

We had our halibut by 10am, so we decided to head NW to see how close the tuna water was. 8 miles later, we had 61.5 deg water. Dropped our lines, and within 5 minutes had two fish in the boat. 5 minutes later, we had two more. I didn't pack very much ice, as this was to be a scouting trip at most (I'd presumed the boys would be pukey, so hadn't anticipated a 'hard-core' approach).

We spun back around hoping to pick up one or two more. Found three schools within 200' of each other jumping all over. Drug our rigging around one school. One sport rod doubled over. I held our speed. Then a handline went tout. Then the other sport rod doubled over. Before I could kill the engine, the other handline went full-stretch. A quad! Disorganized mayhem at this point. We ended up with both sport rods tangled with one of the handlines. Tuff-line is messy stuff huh?

We ended up getting 3 of the 4. I don't even remember what happened to the 4th...We decided to just drop two handlines and head for home. As my bro-in-law started letting out the handline, he got hammered about 15' behind the boat. Fortunately for him, it broke the leader and he didn't lose any fingers. Crazy!

Unfortunately, we didn't know it broke the leader till we pulled the line in 15 minutes later and headed for home.

These guys were as newbie as they come. A couple of one-day fishing trips chasing planter-trout for experience. They really stepped up to the challenge, especially considering what they were having to endure.

There was no favorite color or lure. Fish were caught on Root Beer, Zuchini, Green/White and Black/Purple.

Their belly's were full of little fish, maybe 2" long.

For a day that started out horrible, it ended up pretty darn good.

I'm taking a more seasoned crew tomorrow. I think we're gonna ice up heavy and head straight to tuna town. Not sure if it'll be PO or Charleston though. Will make that call at 0430. OMG, I've got to get to bed!

I'm so tired...

Since we all seem to enjoy a little carnage...here's two tuna heading to the ice, while the latest two bleed out (like the bucket is really doing any good)....

My Christmas list now includes a washdown pump.

Hey M-Y,
What the heck kind of rod holder do you have (I can see it in the picture on your right). Is it homemade? I had one bust off at the base a few weeks ago...looking to upgrade. Cheers...Bob

Bob,
I wish I could remember what it's called. A local guy is marketing them. Not exactly a new concept, but the base of the tube itself pivots, so technically, you could set the hook without pulling the rod out. They have a lot of options concerning what position you want your rod in (high, low, inside of gunnel, outside gunnel, angles back and fro, etc)

They have definetely passed the tuna test, though one time, while making a wide turn, we got hit and the rod holder pivoted straight up. Wasn't a problem, but it sure looked bad!

I'll try and find some info on them if you'd like.

M-Y,
Please e-mail me also if you find some info on those rob holders! I have the "le stryker" from scotty's which are very good rod holders. As long as you are fishing off of d-riggers or setting the drag light on sturgeon, if not it is good-bye rod and holder!

M-Y,
Thanks very much for the response. I would love to get more info on that rod holder - but don't bust your arse getting it. It looks "beefy". Cheers...Bob

Me too! I have snapped three Fish On! types this year (I have lanyards on ALL rods to prevent loss). I would really appreciate an improved option!

I've done some searching, but can't find much info the rod holders. They're called QUICKset rod holders, out of Portland, OR. Here's some info...

Quickset Rod Holder Co
(503) 256-0213 1644 NE 143rd Ave
Portland, OR

Here's a couple pics...

They are all aluminum, have a lot of flex, which I think can be a good thing. You can get rail mount, side mount, and even flush mount hardware for them. Angle configurations are endless.

I was in Coos Bay Marine this morning getting a quote together for my motor repair. This is where I purchased the rodholders.

$19.95 each...As I remember it, I bought them assuming they were probably junk, but they fit in my budget. Now, almost a year later (and lots and lots of fish), they are good as new. I think I'll buy a couple more.

Quikset rodholders used to be carried by FMS. I had a set on my last boat. They worked real well for sturgeon and salmon.

I guess FMS quit carrying them because they could not compete with the guy's direct sales.
