Default Rock pile

Would like to know which port the Rock pile is out of and how long a run it is to it.

Have three kids that love Alaska Halibut and would love catching them in Oregon. How Deep is the water and how much lead do you suggest?

Thanks from a new member.

The rockpile is out of Newport and it is approximately 17 miles out....I do not have gps coordinates but I am sure one of the other Salty Dogs on here does. Good Luck if you make it out.

Try a search of the Salty Dogs for 'rockpile' and/or 'rockpile halibut'. Search is at far right in the second gold bar down from the top. It is hard to spot, here is a link - http://www.ifish.net/cgi-local/ultim...earch_forum=21

The rockpile is out of Newport. On the chart it is known as Stonewall Bank. It is about 16 miles out give or take. Halibut fished generally from 160' to 220' deep. I use 2 lb. lead, but only because this is the only size I make at home. Somedays you need this much (or more) to stay on the bottom, and somedays it is overkill. Lots of folks will mooch for the halibut and/or salmon and/or ling using a 10 oz. or so banana trolling sinker. Most halibut action occurs at the N. and S. ends. N end is about W124:24 and N44:34, you will see the crowd of boats.
