Default Help, I need a part

Anybody know where I can find a part for my Volvo 280 outdrive? I need a new steering fork. I called Harvey Marine and they have one for $480 but I just wanted to see if anyone knew where I might find a used one cheap?

Thanks in advance.

Rod,
Try Chanel Marine. A buddy needed some similar parts and they had some and new a distributor for the rest. If I remember right ..... the parts distributor (for Merc's) for all the shops is in St Johns and my buddy found that the public can purchase the parts direct from them.
Good luck

Thanks guys. I think Outboard Salvage may have one but I need to bring in the old one to make sure it's a match. Only problem is, I'm having trouble getting the old one off!

Also found some interesting things while tearing the outdrive apart. Interesting things meaning things that shouldn't be there!

Anybody ever take one of these outdrives off before? I'm having trouble getting the pivot pins out. Manual says to knock them out but I can't seem to get them to budge, either direction. They have slotted heads, which to me would seem like they need to be unscrewed first. I've tried to unscrew them but I don't have much room to work with so I can't seem to get a lot of leverage on them.

Rod, I may be able to machine one for you if the old one won't weld and you can't find one cheaper. Gotta get it off to get dimensions though...

Corrirod

To remove the pivot pins the only way to remove them is to drive them in towards the outdrive.
If you have a heat gun you can heat the transom as you pound on the pins. Also on the steering fork you can remove it with out removing the whole drive. You may need to heat the transom to remove it. All of the bushing for both the steering forks and pivot pins are plastic and cheap to replace.
I am in the process of putting the outdrive back on a friends boat.

Rod, if you are still having trouble getting the outdrive off E-Mail me, I have the manual, and many removels under my belt.

I can't remember, "Rite-now", could be right about removing the yoke with out removing the outdrive, possibly move the helmet and it will slip down and clear enough to get it out. Seems like I did just that same thing one time.

Do your self a favor, get some anti-sieze compound from the parts store and coat the pins and bolts with it when you put it back together, you will be glad you did.

Let me know if you need any help.

OK ...
I called my buddy and got some more info.
He said he found a used yoke at Clemens Marine out on Marine Dr.
The other item he found was that Napa has a marine catalog that has Merc parts and you can order that way.

Rod, call Dale at Chinook Marine, Chinook, Wa at 360 777-8361, or Henry at the Wrench Connection, Salem, Or, at 503 390-0101. Both are shops and new parts. Very possible they might have what you need used.

Thanks again everyone for the suggestions. Woody, I spoke with Mel and we were talking about the wrong part so unfortunately he doesn't have the one I need. He did however tell me how to get the pins out which I will try today.

The fork I'm in need of is the one that's attached to the outdrive. If I had to name the part myself I'd call it the Tilt fork because it's the piece that allows the outdrive to tilt up/down. It is the piece that houses the water inlet tube and fitting.

Jerry, I'll give those guys a call today if they're open, if not Oregon Outboard Salvage is open on Tuesday and they probably have it.

Thanks.
