Default Where to mount GPS in open boat?

I have been pondering this for sometime and just can't find the correct spot to mount my GPS in an open Alumaweld. Across from me on the port side makes it easy to see and follow the tracks but it doesn't do anything for following a heading. As the unit is 90' to the direction of travel.
Looking for suggestions on how others have mounted the GPS in an open boat.

On my gps, the top of the display is always north. I'm used to it and can orient myself from that. I'm talking one in a vehicle. Maybe just mount it and see if you get used to it. You could always move it later

I may be mistaken as I have just gotten my GPS but I will take a stab at this. Even with the GPS mounted sideways when you travel it still show the same on the screen as if you had it mounted straight. The only reason for not wanting it mounted side ways is if you were using the magnetic compass feature on the unit. Mine only uses this function under 10 MPH. and my unit has to be held level for the mag. compass to work anyways so any time you are traveling faster it orientates the compass off the satellites, so I don't think it would be a big problem. You would just have to orientate your self to it being side ways.
