Shrimp, what happened to the shrimp?
I've been waiting to hear if anyone figured out the shrimping thing this summer. Have I been missing the results?
Anyone find any?

Re: Shrimp, what happened to the shrimp?
Well, I would love some shrimp but never learned where to go and pullin 600 ft of rope by hand kind of discouraged me.. I mean, i'll reel in a fish from that depth but a rope by hand?? YIKES!

Rod, this has absolutely nothing to do with shrimp!!!! Just thought I would get your attention and find out how that overheating problem on the dory turned out? Did you figure out what the problem was? Just curious?

Re: Shrimp, what happened to the shrimp?
Well I think so Jerry. I'll know if I was right on the next trip out I guess.
Anyway, what appears to have been the culprit is the copper inlet tube to the raw water pump. It is flared on the end and there was a large crack in the bend of the flare. This crack was allowing air to get into the line, thus shutting off flow sporadically to the raw water pump. With no raw water to cool the heat exchanger or the oil cooler, presto, you overheat.
I'm still not sure that's the only culprit but it appears to have subsided the problem for now.

Re: Shrimp, what happened to the shrimp?
Rod, I made some traps this last weekend. That was after I heard a story from a friend about a guy fishing up by Tacklebuster with an unbaited metal crawdad trap tethered to each crab trap. He was pulling in crab traps with hydraulics and prawns were flipping across the deck and into the scuppers. The fast pull pinned them to the wire so they could not bail until the trap was on deck. The next trip he added the crawdad traps and got a few shrimp, 5lbs.
It worked and he has purchased all the crawdad traps he could find.
I am making some out of 1/2" hardware cloth in black plastic. This is at Home Depot in 3' by 15' rolls for $10. You need hogring pliers, hogrings and some ty wraps. Not hard to make just time consuming. Copy the cone from the storebought crawdad trap and make a cutout template for the ends.
I have 200ft ropes now on my crab traps and want to try this at or near the rockpile soon. Or maybe just out from the beach in 120ft of water.

Re: Shrimp, what happened to the shrimp?
Last weekend, we caught hundereds, if not thousands of shrimp just north of the Charleston Bar. They came up with our crab pots.
Unfortunately, they averaged right around 1/4" long...........

Re: Shrimp, what happened to the shrimp?
I have done a bit shrimping up here in the Puget Sound. Have a couple shrimp traps each with 300' of rope. Magic depth up here for the spotted prawns seems to be 220-250'. I'm crazy and haul my traps up by hand, but most people have pot pullers. I can't imagine that shrimping in the big water is much different. I'd be happy to bring my pots down sometime for a ride out in the big blue.
