Default Muley-West Beulah Archery

Spot and stalk success with this Muley, 43 yards and a 10 yard
finisher. This was a tough hunt and anyone else who drew the tag
will agree. This was a new hunt this year and some of us who
had been applying for the Metolious switched and drew it, I personaly
had 10 points some other guys had up to 12. I know this because
most all the hunters were in a centralized area, not to chew on sour
grapes here but ODFW needs to Re-think this one. There are a lot
of does here but a limted amount of bucks and and even less trophy
bucks, open sage hill sides and no cover! After waiting ten years
I was hoping for a Pope and Young class Muley it did not take too
many days of hunting and comparing notes to see the standards
needed dropped. On the day I killed this guy I had made the statement
that any buck is stalkable today.
I hope everyone doesn't get me wrong here, this is my first Mule Deer
and I took it with Archery gear under Fair Chase conditions. Those
factors are enough to call this a huge success I just thought 10
years would give me a little more for my time!

All in all 2008 will be a year to remember and lots of reason to give
thanks, I drew a sheep tag and brought home a nice one- drew
a Late season Mule Deer tag and brought one home. Life could
be one heck of a lot worse!!!!!!!

We also got both hunts on video, thanks to my good friend Parry!!

This is a representation of the country at sunrise.

3x3 20 1/2" wide

Looks like a hard area to hunt for sure. But good job none the less. Not a bad looking muley at all....any muley taken archery is a good one. Thanks for sharing.

Congrats T.S. Sorry to hear that the hunt was a little bit of a disappointment. Still a good buck. I would like to see your videos. I will pm you or email you. You had a great 2008 season. Later, Wheels.

Congrats on the animal, thats still a nice deer, especially with a bow.
Concerning the area you hunted, you make it sound as if this tag is only valid for the open sage country.
I archery hunt the Beulah unit during the general season.
Unless I'm reading the regs incorrectly.
Quote:

HUNT 165R: W Beulah
- 80% public lands.
That part of Unit 65 west of the
following line: Beginning at the junction
of Hwy 20 and N Fork of Malheur Rvr at
Juntura; north on N Fork Malheur Rvr
to Little Malheur Rvr; then northerly on

Little Malheur Rvr to FR 16; north and
east on 16 to Hwy 26 east of Unity. This
tag is NOT valid for the General Deer
Bowhunting Season. This would be your

only archery season deer opportunity.
Wouldn't a significant portion of Malhuer National Forest and Wallowa Whitman be open as well for this tag.
Giving you access to not only open sage, but Mountain Mahogany, Manzanita, and stands of timber.
Unless there's snow in the mountain, which according to the snotel sites, there doesn't seem to be,
why would you expect the big deer to be down that low.

Yea Thats what I thought as well, lots of fair bucks in them parts as well. although it kind of sucked this year. Deer numbers were way down in that unit, I think they had a large winter kill

One of the other problems not mentioned was: The boundaries were
confusing at best, myself and a few other hunters were actually
outside the unit at times without knowing it. And we heard go up to
the Mahogony thickets the deer are still up high!!! Well deer leave
tracks and no tracks were found. No deer up high!!!!

We had second season elk tags for west beulah, we saw some great big ole bucks still up high due to the lack of snow.

Nice long tines....great looking animal! Maybe not the wallhanger you wanted, but still a very nice trophy for the hunt conditions.

That is a nice buck, can understand your frustration on wanting something bigger. We all think this way. You have a nice deer there. I would not be to disapointed at all, especially with a bow and arrow. Congrats on a wonderful 2008 hunting.
