Default Halibut season open until all fish gone

If you hadn't heard...

Halibut season open until all fish gone

Statesman Journal
August 19, 2003

You can fish until they’re all gone.

With 85,000 pounds still left to catch, all-depth halibut fishing will be open every Friday and Saturday until none of the quota remains, or until Oct. 31, whichever comes first.

Oregon fishery managers decided to open the all-depth fishery two days a week after more than 40 tons of the highly prized flatfish remained to catch after open days Aug. 1, 2, 8 and 9.

With the coho salmon season closing after fishing today, interest in halibut fishing could pick up.

The open area is between Cape Falcon, near Manzanita, south to Humbug Mountain near Port Orford.

The bag limit remains the first fish 32 inches or longer, with a six-halibut season limit.

Also on the topic of halibut: At 7 p.m. Sept. 3, Fish and Wildlife will hold a public meeting in Newport to talk about, and take public comments on, the 2004 halibut season.

The meeting is in Room 30, Hatfield Marine Science Center, 2030 SE Marine Science Drive, Newport.

FYI
I found this on the ODFW site:
http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/odfw/fin..._regs2003.html

August 15 2003

2003 Pacific Halibut Fishery
Central Oregon Coast All-depth Recreational Pacific Halibut Fishery to reopen August 22, 2003.

Sufficient poundage remains after the August 1, 2, 8 and 9 fishery for Pacific halibut in all-depth waters between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain to reopen on August 22. The Summer fishery is structured to be open on Fridays and Saturdays. Thus, the fishery will be open on August 22 and 23 and will continue on Fridays and Saturdays until the earlier of October 31 or quota attainment.

The recreational Pacific halibut fishery between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain remains open inside of the 30-fathom curve seven days a week. This fishery will remain open until either the quota is reached or October 31, 2003, whichever occurs first.

The Oregon recreational Pacific halibut fishery also remains open in all-depth waters north of Cape Falcon and south of Humbug Mountain seven days a week.

The daily bag limit is the first fish 32 inches or longer and the annual limit is six Pacific halibut.

Retention of canary rockfish and yelloweye rockfish is prohibited during the all-depth Pacific halibut season if any halibut are on board the vessel.

The dates of the all-depth fishery, quotas, and seasons by area are detailed on the map shown below.
