Default laser rangefinder question part 2

I have noticed that when it is raining that I cant get my rangefinder to read very well if at all. Is there modes on them for rain? I have a bushnell yardage pro. It is one that fits in your hand.

Are there any instructions for them online?

you get what you pay for i have learned. the cheap range finders like yours and mine work at half the listed range in the best conditions in general. rain fog scatter the weak beam ours put out, i have a 1500 yd one and it has never ranged anything beyond 800yds in perfect conditions. in rain about 400yds is max if light rain. heavy rain or fog i leave it in case. basicly worthless

There are setting that will help it read in the rain. The lower end models do not have them. In the rain there is too much movement and the density of the rain drops can hinder the laser. You should PM JNicholson, he is very familiar with the Bushnell line of products

This is'nt what you want to hear. Sorry, but baltz is right. I have a leica LRF1200. It works fairly well. I would concider the lower end leica's a minimum for most ranging work. Unless ya want to reach waaay out there at some unexpecting vermin. Then the price goes up.
I would advise you to hide the upper end equipment for the wife. She will not understand....

all I need it to range is out to 100yrds max. Anything after that is too far from the road to shoot. J/K. I bowhunt so really anything after 100 yrds means I need to get closer.

Anything out to a hundred and you're spot on? Let's be realistic and stick to 40 yds and under.

I am only sighted in to 50 max. But I bet I can get closer.

BTW, how often do you really get to use the rangefinder? The elk is coming and all of a sudden there he is, do you take the time to get the range or do you just pick a spot and shoot?

A lot of the times you can't get it out and use it before they jump. I used mine wuite a lot this year, but I hadn't spooked them yet. Each situation will likely be different. Good luck.

One more thing, while you're in the field, practice guessing ranges to trees, stumps, whatever. Then use the tool to see how good your guess was. Do this enough and the need for it in cruch time won't be as important.

When I go out to hunt coyote's, I get on a stand and range a bunch of points around me before any calling starts. If a coyote ever gets dumb enought to come into my call, I won't have to worry about how far it is, I already have a real good idea.

I would think hunting with a bow would mean hunting in a blind. why can't you do the same thing there? Range everything before really settling in. Then when something comes in you got pre-knowledge of distances. Just a thought as I don't bow hunt.

Rob is right. Use the rangefinder to learn to read distances. In no time you'll be able to estimate ranges without the rangefinder, for bowhunting at least. If you set-up in a treestand, or on the ground, range some trees and paths where you expect game to come from. When an animal comes into range you'll already know which pin to use. Even if you primarily still hunt (walking the woods), you'll stop and sit at some point. Just range things around you.
