Default WDF have a field day in Ilwaco

Was talking with some other salmon fishers Saturday evening and WDF was having all sorts of fun. As most of you dogs know, at the CR you can now keep 3 salmon at Bouy 10. Either 3 fin clipped coho or 2 fin clips and one nook. In the ocean you get only two fish, but can come inside to catch your third. WDF confiscated over 200 salmon in Ilwaco Saturday and wrote many tickets for having too many fish. Fish with fins and not tagging fish. Most people tagged 3 coho's, all from the ocean. I have not heard what happened in Hammond or Warrenton, but I assume the same type of thing :depressed: Seems kinda silly to pay a big fine for that extra fish. Be carefull out there and make sure you know the rules.

And know how to tell the difference between a coho and a chinook! I talked to the osp at Newport and asked why there were so many violations and they said that folks were keeping the big 15 lb. silvers assuming they were chinook. Black gums = chinook, white=coho. That being said, they can be difficult to id sometimes as 5-cents found out last weekend at Nehelem. That's not as bad as the guy I saw 3 years ago at the Chinook store having his picture taken with his nice 6 lb clipped steelhead he cought in the ocean when retention wasn't permitted!

Hey Kevin. Met one of your buddies down on the dock sunday. Said you got a big nook. I would'nt have known since I only tried to call ya a bizillion times. Every time I got a busy signal. Congrats on the biggy fish.

I pulled my boat out due to serious mechanical failures. You can read about it on the SD board. Your buds aluminum boat is cool.

Almost found out the hard way!
Both nooks and coho can have bark gums.
Nooks have dark gums and are dark at the base of the teeth and coho have bark gums that are much lighter at the teeth line.
Had to see them side by side.
Now I don't look at the gums,I look at the teeth.

I got checked in Ilwaco as my boat was halfway on the trailer. I convinced the trooper to let me at least get out of everyone's way first. While in the parking lot he checked the fish and tags. He told me he never heard of a hatchery tag and he'd been doing this for yrs, "must be some new way Oregon is getting your money", Yes sir that's it I guess. I learned a hard lesson years ago arguing with the cops.

Another way to tell a silver from a nook is to look at the spots on the tail...Silvers have spots only on the upper part of the tail...nooks have spots that are all over the tail, as well as larger spots across the back. Scales on nooks are also larger than silvers. However, the white gumline is the easiest way to identify if it's a coho/silver though.

Bernie,
Sorry to hear about your boat. Hopefully you will be able to get it going. Had a good day on nooks! Will be down through labor day beginning Thursday this week. Try my beach # or cell. I have a pretty full boat most days, but check and maybe we can drown a worm together. 24th or 25th a possibility.
That 23' Storm is one hecka of a vessel. Can't wait to get a ride on her. Want to go Tuna hunting on her but the skipper gets a little green around the gills with any length of time on the big blue :depressed: .
Kenai, my brother in law was checked putting his boat on the trailer and they crawled inside a ripped his boat apart. He did question them and they said they were just checking......for hidden fish. He was not too pleased. I worry about my harvest card and then the tag for non-clipped nooks. Two different tags with fish on both Hope they know the rules.
Careful with all those tags and rules.

Kevin, I think they just want to make their presence known right off the bat. No probem. But if they tear my boat apart they better darn well put everything back too!

Lots of goofy rules attached to this fishery. Kevin, only have one number for ya.

Best place to tell is the gums right at the base of the teeth. If it's light colored, release it and catch another. $304 is the fine, so I hear, so when in doubt I throw it back. Threatened species or not, it ain't worth the hefty penalty.

Can they board your vessel and just start opening things up without your permission or probable cause? I thought we had this discussion awhile back.

Tilla Nope.

Be careful about looking at just the gums. Some of those ho's have a very dark lower gum line nice little white teeth showing through. The truth is in the upper gum line and teeth. That is the place to look. Also a quick swip of the fingers on the scales will verify coho or nook. Coho scales are very loose and come off easily. nooks are tight and stay mostly put. Very spotty tail on the nooks also.

Bernie - do NOT go by the upper gumline (at least in Oregon), the Fish and Game look only at the lower. I just talked to one today about ticketing etc. He said he's had to write a lot of citations for people going by the upper jaw, they only have one criteria and that's the lower gumline.

PS folks, it's not the teeth, it's the gums around the teeth. Coho can and will have dark gums but they will be white right around the base of the teeth.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Exactly, the base of the teeth are black, dark gray for nook. And as Bullhead said, the nooks have spots on the upper and lower tail. The game regs are vague in the pics, but the explanations okay. They like it vague, hence more tickets, but then again i could just be being paranoid.
