Newport Fishing
Limited the boat on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning. Friday we dropped our lines right at the outer buoy and picked up our first keeper 5 minutes later. Back at the dock three hours later. On both Saturday and Sunday we left the dock at 7 AM (Lazy  ) and were back by 11 with our limits. Before this weekend the ratio of keepers to natives heavily favored the natives, but now it seems there are a lot more hatchery fish. We landed 4 keepers for every native this weekend. Saturday and Sunday all fish were caught in 180-220 ft of water just northwest of the Yaquina lighthouse. Big blue was a lake on Friday afternoon and Saturday. Sunday morning wasn't too bad but I'm glad we got in early cuz the afternoon really blew and the fog rolled in early. We fished for Cohos only.

Re: Newport Fishing
Sea Foam,
That is interesting about your Hatchery/Native ratios. When I was out Saturaday, I couldn't hardly get a Hatchery. We were about 5 natives for every hatchery. Some of the natives we released were huge also (~15lbs).
If your reading this message, then it is probably too late for this year. Now it is time for the story telling to start about how good a year 2003 was in the ocean.

Re: Newport Fishing
I fished out of Newport on Saturday and Sunday and we also had a very high native to hatchery ratio. I'll bet we went through 40 silvers on Sat. to get 8 hatchery cohos. Yesterday ifisher ZZZzzzz's and I limited quickly with 2 small chinook, 15 and 10 and 2 nice hatchery cohos about 10 lbs. Only cought two native coho before we filled our limit. We also fished off the lighthouse in 220-240 feet of water. Found a good friend of mine at the dock in Newport cleaning three chinooks, two over 40 lbs. He was fishing divers at about 30 pulls with just a cut plug and no hootchie. What a great weekend on the ocean though!

Re: Newport Fishing
Yeah, maybe it was just luck on the native to hatchery ratio thing, but it is strange that it was like that for all three days. Also, when I was about a half mile south of the big pack out there on Sunday there was a HUGE concentration of big fish on the graph down deep. It looked like all the Nooks in the area had shown up in one spot and there was nobody on top of them. I think I'm gonna have to get rigged up and go back out after em as soon as things settle back down enough to fish after work.

Re: Newport Fishing
Sea Foam,
We fished out of Newport on Saturday and must have been real close to you. We started fishing straight out in front of the lighthouse in 185' of water. We trolled divers NW into the swell and picked up two nice hatchery fish right away. We continued to troll NW out to 220' of water where we stayed for the rest of the day. The bite was never hot but fairly consistant at a takedown every 20 minutes or so. For us, the native/hatchery ratio ran about 3/1.
I saw that school of fish too out in 220' of water. Marked a lot of fish but the top of the school was never higher than 50'. Spent most of the day chasing it around with the fish finder.
Ended the day at 4:00 with 6 nice Silvers and two Blue Sharks. Saw a lot of sharks and at one point we had a double on. Two sharks on at the same time - what fun! We released them with some new jewelry to show off to their friends.

Re: Newport Fishing
OK Tideripper, I'm hearing some reports of both high and low ratio catches so it had to be just dumb luck. It was about time though cuz the two previous trips had netted only one keeper each time and 8-10 fish caught on two rods. Diver_Down yes that's me. The two guys in the back of the boat are my 80 year old dad and his buddy. This was the first time I've been able to get him out salmon fishing in about 15 years so to have limited everyday made it a weekend I'll never forget. It was a heck of a lot of work but worth it. By the way that is the first picture I've seen of Sea Foam underway. Would you mind if I grabbed it and tried to work it into an Avatar?

Sea Foam
Did I talk to you at the fish cleaning station on Saturday? I am a fairly tall middle aged fellow. As I was cleaning my fish, somebody and his dad split on both sides of me. All I know is the person works at the Toledo paper mill, and has a 40' trawler for a boat (that he sailed down from Portland). After seeing your boat, and reports, I am now wondering if that was you.

Seafoam,
How about some info on that boat of yours? She is a "looker" for sure. Nice boat. Did you do alot of the work on her yourself? What a picture!!!! That would go on my office wall if that were my boat.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">I only made it out Saturday, but the weather was fantastic! You don't get too many days like that out on the big blue.
After talking to you about your boat Saturday, I "mentioned" it to my wife, and asked if she would ever be interested in something like that, hypothetically speaking. She said Yes!
Now that I'm past the toughest part, I just need to start working on the rest of the action plan.
Nice boat. I would love to have something like that myself. Thanks for the good convesation at the cleaning station (once you proved there was enough room  )

Re: Newport Fishing
Drifter, She's an Eagle Trawler, and made in Taiwan of course. They are sold by Friday Harbor Yachts on San Juan Island. She was built in '95 and I've owned her since '99. It's a 40' semi-displacement hull with a 14.5' beam and 4.5' draft. Single 210HP Cummins diesel and a big 3' rudder. She's a great foul weather boat. I found out just how good she is when I brought her down the coast from the San Juans in 15' seas right after I got her. (Never do that again!!)Fuel capacity is 450 gallons and at 8.5 knots she sips fuel at 4 gallons an hour. The only work I've done on her was add the dingy davit on the back and some additional electronics. The guy that owned her before me was a retired tugboat capt. in Naniamo, B.C. and he had heart trouble. They sold the boat with everything on it. When I started looking in all the nooks and crannys I found stuff in there I couldn't believe. (downriggers, canning supplies, vacuum packer, fishing gear, spare parts, galley stuff, etc) I didn't have to buy anything for the boat itself except a chart plotter. It's a great boat.
