First Year Hunting
Hi all! This is my first year hunting for Blacktail, (I think they are extinct) didn't see any, and doing a western oregon hunt for Elk, (they might be extinct too). I'm wondring if you wouldn't mind sending me some info on how to hunt these animals. When do you start bugling? where do you find them when? Is there any info on how to bugle? I'm 45 and never been, so I need all he help I can get.
Thanks!!

First, for the most part, bugling takes place in the September timeframe. Nowadays, everybody and their brother can and does bugle. It is not as effective as 20 years ago. Get a hunting dvd or tape on cow talk and start practicing now for next season. That's the best advice I can give you.
Elk hunting is much like deer hunting, in the fact that the more time you spend in the woods the more opprtunities you will have. Do your best to wear out a pair of boots and you'll be on the right track.
Good Luck!

First of all give up sport fishing for sport hunting. You can always go back to sport fishing once you've learned about big game hunting.
Hanging on to fishing knowledge will just mess up your new hunting knowledge. It will slow you down to keep fishing.
The next thing you do is read a lot of hunting articles & books on blacktails. Could also search this forum on hunting topics.
If you keep sport fishing you'll get distracted by it and make the mistake of hunting in rubber boots like I do.

Re: First Year Hunting
Blacktail & Roosevelt elk are not extinct. They are mythological animals fables to live in the coast range .
Even growing up on the Oregon Coast, I've had very little luck on elk down there. Just one spike & some cows....all on special tags not general season. It is my opinion from experience that almost all are killed by farmers that have them bedding in their meadows or loggers that see the herds every day on their way in to work.
Blacktails are a bit easier for me now that I own some property in some prime blacktail habitat. I find trails and sit and wait for them to come to me rather than trying to move and spook them off. I don't usually even bother other than first weekend and again after Halloween when they start rutting.
By the way my property is for sale...PM me for details folks.
