Default Back from Southern Oregon chasing Blacktails - Nice buck!

I just spent the last few days hopping from treestand to treestand in hopes of whacking a nice blacktail buck. Saw lots of animals, but like my friend mentioned before, it was SLOW. I saw a couple really nice bucks, but nothing in archery range. This morning I had the most action out of all the days combined. Turkeys, lots of doe activity and a small buck that I would not have shot even though he was legal. Tons of bear sign on all the treestands.

My buddy whacked this buck on Friday morning at 9am as he was following a receptive doe.

This is his best buck to date and very deserving as well for a young guy who tragically lost his father earlier this spring. I was very happy for him to put an arrow through this buck and we spent some extra time getting quite a few photos for him to have.

I'll be heading down next week to try and fill my tag one more time. I love the size of the bucks in southern Oregon. For anyone who has a Applegate muzzle loader tag... get out there! A guy I know called us and they killed a nice 4pt and a big 3pt in a matter of hours. The bucks in that area are on fire! I wish we were having the same amount of luck.

Congratulations to your buddy for sticking that great buck. You've built up quite a bit of good karma lately helping others get their animals so I'm sure there's a big buck waiting for you. Good Luck!

Tell your friend congrats Wil. Sorry to hear about his father. I'm sure that buck will mean more to hime than any buck he gets the rest of his life no matter how big. Good luck if you head back down there this weekend. Give me a call and let me know what your plans are. I had does, fawn, and a spike around my stand all weekend with no mature buck in sight. Tried some calling a rattling with no luck. Talk to you later.

no you can not hunt the applegate with a bow. i was down in that area last weekend hunting and saw over 100 deer with 4 shooters, i did have a forky at 18 yards and passed on him. put a stock in on a nice 115 inch 3 point, but the doe he was chasing would not stop and when she did he always stopped in a spot where i could not get an arrow in the vitals. that is hunting. my buddy called me last night and they saw 25 bucks in the last day and a half so will be going down again this weekend to try and smoke one. good luck wil!!!!

Sweet buck. So OR has some nice deer. Grew up down there, but was never fortunate to get into them during the season.

It was pretty funny. We got in the stands and it was COLD. Justin settled in and was ready but as the sun began to rise and warmed him up, he felt a little sleepy. Shook himself awake after a few minutes and this buck was hot on a doe under his stand. Got ready, took a shot and missed the buck!

He ran off and Justin was bummed to say the least. A couple minutes later a doe runs back under his stand and here he comes again, stops in between two trees and Justin threads the needle and makes a perfect shot. Buck ran off 60 yards and kicks over backwards sticking his antlers in the ground.

Yes, we got it all on film

I'm going to propose to ODF&W that they trap some of those bucks and bring them North to help repopulate the herd up here.

Yes, it doesn't matter how much light you have - turn on the flash. It will fill in all the deep shadows and really make the photo pop. I use the auto setting on the D70 to get exposure reading and then I adjust the aperture and shutter speed to even out the photo. I think I took 75 photos total... and there were 5 that I really liked both vertical and horizontal with eyes open etc.

We were talking about taking photos after we got bak and looked at them on the laptop. For me, I think anything we hunt is an absolute beautiful creature. I really try to bring forward that beauty to people who dont hunt. They may not like the thought of it being dead, but everyone likes a good photo

Too cool, you've intreaged me to certainly go to southern Oregon next year. I can't do just one blacktail for WA, they're my favorite.... I'll be figuring something out for OR as well...

Nice work taking some photos and making sure you've got some good ones. Sometimes guys get a bit excited about packing out the buck to take time to make sure they've recorded some good pics.

Thanks for sharing the photo.
