Re: deep frying a turkey
about 6-7 gallons. I buy 2 of the regular fry oils from costco so I have extra. It is not really necessary to use the peanut oil, it is way more expensive. I have done it for the last 5 years and the turkeys are great. 3 minutes per pound at 350-375. Good luck

Take your turkey and put it in the empty pot, then fill it to about 3" below the top with water, remove the turkey and that is how much oil you will need.................

change to read just covers the bird.
too much oil will spill over the top as you lower the bird in the hot oil.
another tip, spread some dry sweep (kitty litter) around the cooker to catch the splatter that will occur
for a 14lb bird, one jug of oil will do it.

And for one more safety tip, turn the burner off when you lower the turkey in. Then re-light it. That way if it does accidentally boil over, you don't have any flame to ignite it.

- but be careful when reigniting
Ditto the previous posts on depth, use of kitty litter and turning the burner off when lowering the bird. Any excess moisture will cause the oil to bubble over if not "explode". IMHO 3" clearance is definitely not enough and any boil-over or spillage with flame present may inadvertently render the "chef" hairless, if not cause severe skin burns, burn down a deck or home. turkey frying is a major cause for home fires & injuries during the holidays. Baaaaad news.

Re: deep frying a turkey
Lower it in very slowly do not put in fast or it will go over. Add turkey to the pan, add water to cover, take the turkey out mark the pan where the left over water is and add that much oil after drying the pan fully. The water and oil dont mix well.
Good luck, try marinading it.
