Default I need to turn in a poacher, who do I call?

In Corvallis, apparently there is someone I know who's friend is hunting in a city park on the outskirts of town at night with a bow. Apparently he shot a deer last night and couldn't find it. I need to alert someone to this but who do I contact? Where can I find a number?

Thanks

Ok, I made the call to TIP, the lady didn't sound all that enthused though.

How many out there are hearing the same thing about the tip line. I had a guy just yesterday say he wouldn't bother with reporting anymore because of his experience. It seems that the system is broken or needs to be looked at. I used the tip line once with less than steller responce.

I think the TIP line works if you have something pretty concrete- something where they are reasonably sure they can make an arrest. In this case, although I wish the departments had the resources to at least investigate, they probably look at is as: heresay, no game taken yet, and the poacher is now alerted by the world-wide web and might take his actions elsewhere.

This does seem to be a recurring issue doesn't it. In my efforts to stop poachers in the last couple of weeks Ive discovered that you can also report violations online by clicking the links on the ODFW or OSP webpage. For violations not in progress I think this is the way ill go in the future. I dont know what it is, but despite the training Im sure they must complete, the people answering the phone do seem to have a somewhat dismissive attitude towards a alot of calls.

Walk in to the local OSP district office. It used to be in Corvallis, but may have moved to Albany. Ask to see a game trooper and leave your telephone number.

I would not call the tip line. They are looking for something fairly concrete like i saw someone do this. I would look at OSP's website and give a call to one of the regional reps. For you it would be in Albany. Good luck and I hope the guy gets what he deserves.

My bad experiences with the hotline incude instances where Ive provided some pretty concrete info, suspect/vehicle desriptions, plate #'s, exact locations within a few minutes of the violation. One thing we need to remember though is that the demeanor of the person on the other end of the line does not necessarily reflect how the OSP trooper who ultimately gets the tip responds to it.

That doesnt change the fact that the response from the person answering the phone might discourage the caller from reporting violations in the future. The fact that this is happening indicates a problem with the program.

I fully support the OSP's Fish and Wildlife Division enforcement efforts but would not be thrilled by a lackluster report taker either. I would suggest that you file a follow-up report and contact the regional office to see what they're going to do about it. If you're not satisfied with the answer then you need to call the boss, the same as in any other instance of (potential) unsatisfactory service.

You can download a Violation Report and send it to osp.fwd@state.or.us for the follow up.

The local office is in Albany:

Albany Area Command
3400 Spicer Road
Albany, OR 97322
Phone: 541-967-2026
Fax: 541-967-2164

And if necessary, the regional FW Lieutenant is:

Lieutenant Steve Lane
Oregon State Police
3710 Portland Road NE
Salem, OR 97303
503-378-3387

They might already be doing everything possible to address your report but there's no way of knowing if you don't ask. Also, the "Boss" can't fix it if they don't know it's broken..

Hope that helps -

"CL"

The OSP tipline is a general statewide dispatch line. You will be much better off introduing yourself to the local troopers as someone they can trust. Then they will most likely give their cel number to make direct contact.
Always leave your info if possible, this adds credibility to the call. Dispatchers are trained to remain calm, and it may seem they arent interested, but they are.
The more info the better, including pics of people, vehicles, locations, etc.
If another person also calls, this helps add credibility also.

This is what I do, I have one of the retired Access & Habitat officers on my phone. He is always interested!

Yep, I do the same. I've got cell numbers for both the Polk count game officer (where I live) and for a Sauvie's Island officer. That "meet and greet" with them (even if over the phone) is worth it in more ways than one.

We should all remember that weak response from law enforcement, especially for the fish and wildlife violoations can be related to their being pretty short on staff and very very busy. Be persistent and supportive, also keep your state reps informed that you want OSP to get more resources...

I called in a violation to the osp office, the lady was ok but I know what you mean about it.....very dull to say the least, the troopers did call me back within a hour and did show later on that day. I ask any I see now for a card with a cell #.

Hmmm. Always had GREAT luck with the tip line. Called it MANY, MANY times and got a call back from an officer within an hour on all of them. Most of them, I got a call when the officer arrived on site. Furthermore, all the information you provide they keep track of. It helps them when decided when and where to do the WED busts.
