Hi,i have and have done alot of fishing in my life but very little hunting, but i keep on hearing about varmint hunting, specifically sage rats in the spring, who has done this and where does one do this at,any info at all would be great, thanks and have a great day!
I hunt in the Christmas Valley. Permission is hard to get. There are places further East that I hear that permission is not so hard to obtain I usually start about Spring vacation.

I have only hunted them once and that was over near the Sumpter unit when we were doing a spring bear hunt last year. In the town of Unity nearby, every spring they have a sage rat hunt that you pay to hunt I think it is in teams of 5 maybe 4 but you go on different ranchers fields and shoot all day. Sounds like fun maybe next year I will do it. I heard over by Fort Rock there are some ranches that allow hunting with only rimfire rifles.
Oregon has gotten to the point that even sage rat hunting is competitive anymore when it comes to finding a place to hunt.
Northern CA is well worth money since the crowds thin out to a degree when compared to the amt of rats around.

Eastern Washington. The areas around Prosser are LOADED with em. Orchards, and vineyards are the hot spots. Get in good with grape growers....I don't think they like the damage the rats do.
They will usually let you hunt as long as no one is working in the vineyards/fields/orchards.
well thats A START,I will do more research and see what i can come up with, just talked to a guy i work with that has done this, and it was in a alfalfa feild in christmas valley ,going to try to get more info from him,,,,,
lots of them down here in KFalls. if you are interested in coming down let me know ahead of time and if i have filled one of my spring turkey tags i could take you out. i have a few farmer friends that love to see as many of them shot up as possible.
we go over to idaho to visit family and there are tons of them around parma nyssa homedale anywhere in the grassland there. not as competitive as oregon, and only $ 30 bucks for a year licence
