My 2008 hunting season
New member to the board, though I have checked it out a few times.
Deer season came and went without a deer. Took a buddy from work with me a few times so he could see what it was like. Unfortunately, we didn't get a deer although we saw a few does and one buck. When he wasn't with me I saw numerous elk and two spike bucks, one who I almost thought was a 2-point. His antlers curved out and went nearly to the top of his ears. In the end, no deer.
Actually, I did see a few deer, but most were around town, including this guy.
One morning when we went out behind locked gates we jumped a doe early, but nothing else was around her. Good sign though, a deer right from the start.
Kept going and glassed as it got light out. Walked through some brush on the side of the road to get a better vantage point and started looking at the older clearcut for any movement... and something took off! Was small, brought up the binos and saw it was a coyote! Put my earplugs in, brought my gun up and laid it on the brach of this 7' tall tree. Don't know what kind, but had the really stiff and pokey needles on it. Tried to get the coyote in the crosshairs, but couldn't see him at first. Adjusted the scope to 6x and found him. As I got the crosshairs on him, he crested the top of this little ridge and was out of sight. Damn... missed my first shot at a coyote. But then he came back towards me and was in sight again. Followed him in the scope, he stopped behind a stump and looked at me. Could see his head, neck and front legs, but the rest was covered. Safety off, took aim at what was available to shoot at, and got my first coyote He was about 175 yards. That 140 Accubond sure messed him up!
Saw a black bear nearly in the same spot a couple weeks later, but didn't have a tag. Had to let him walk. Here are some of the elk I saw though.
For the Saddle Mountain elk opener I wasn't sure where I was going to go. Saw elk behind Seaside and down towards Cannon Beach, both areas had legal bulls that I saw. My neighbor is a logger and saw a nice 5-point a couple days before the elk opener and since he had a second season tag, he offered to take me up to try and get him. Fight the rush of hunters or get back farther and try and avoid them... Opening morning we started at a clearcut first to see if anything was out, then headed in the woods he's been seeing him at. After a few hours we just saw one other hunter, but no elk.
We drove around checking out a couple clearcuts, but saw nothing. The cover didn't look that good around them so we didn't go into the surrounding woods and just pressed on to another he had in mind. Said there were some great trees and cover next to the cut that we were going to still hunt through. As we were coming up to this area I could see the trees and thought the cover looked pretty good. As soon as we saw the clearcut next to them, I spotted a bunch of elk! No way, too good to be true... and there are a bunch of bulls. Looked like some cows, four spikes, one legal bull plus this guy. Stopped, jumped out, went off the side of the road, got a rest and that was it. Pure luck really.
About 3 or 4 minutes after I got him two people came walking out of the woods we were going to go into. They found him and the herd he was with, saw him a few times, never got a shot off. They pushed them out into the clearing, we saw him and thats that. Right place at the right time. Was about 150 yards.
Had a good hunting season. Saw a lot of game, some beautiful scenery, one less coyote to get fawns, and elk in the freezer.

The weather was pretty warm! Had to shed some layers, especially trying to get him to the road.

Re: My 2008 hunting season
Yep, the 270 took him. Coyote and an elk to its name. Got it earlier in the year, am pleased with it so far, but have yet to stretch the distance out to see how it does at longer ranges. Prefer to take short shots if I can anyway.

Hey reel obsession....the first thing...you have to find an elk....so we probably don't need to worry about it....

LOL...... Speak for yourself Jack. I got it figured out here. Just had to frame forward slowly until Jim Zumbo got his big ol' cowboy hat out of the way on the Outdoor Channel, now with the help of freeze frame, I can finally see an elk standing still..........

Re: My 2008 hunting season
Nice story. I'm impressed you took the time to take a pic through the scope before shooting. Cant imagine I would ever do that.

Re: My 2008 hunting season
The bull in the crosshairs wasn't the bull I took. Saw that guy during deer season. After I was done taking pics I let him know I was there so he'd go into the trees and not be seen by others
