Re: discarding a carcas
I've heard of guys taking some of the remnants back up with a trailcam and "baiting" predators. Didn't know if this was 1. ethical or 2. legal. I'm with Baltz. Throw it in the garbage.

Re: discarding a carcas
I'm lucky, we have 20 acres out back, we feed the local yotes and the neigborhood dogs. We keep expecting somebody to complain about the deer and elk bones ending up in there yards, guess they don'w want us asking why their dogs are running loose. Scrap meat goes to the crows.
I'ver heard of some fuss from the timber companies from people dumping the carcasses back onto their property, but I think the main complaint is the plastic bags and other garbage that goes with it. I think you can get in trouble for dumping a carcass too close to a stream, kinda odd, that is where most sick animals go to die in nature.

I would not recommend doing this, deer bones are not good for dogs. They can be consumed and cause intestinal problems with your pooch. I found this out the hard way with my old Blue heeler about 7 years ago. We lost him because of it. Talk with your vet, he probably will say the same thing

We nearly lost my now old bule heeler the same way. That was 9-10 years ago. Now the only meat or bones she gets are ones that have been cooked a little on the BBQ. No more problems.
I always take my offall back to the woods and discreetly toss it in some brush. So it can go back into the food chain.
Around here there are so many idiots that dump the carcass tarp, some plastic bags and whatever trash happened to be in thier truck right on the side of the road. Every time I see this stuff I just think its another nail in the coffin for us as hunters.

Re: discarding a carcas
If you decide to dump it in the woods, dump just the critter parts. (no paper towls or bags) And be disctrete about where you dump it, aviod turnouts and such where the public may come across it. Mine goes on the edge of a field where I coyote hunt. And FYI it is legal to hunt over bait for coyotes in WA.
I don't see a need to put it in the landfill if you don't have too. Just a different way of compposting as far as I'm concerned. And I'd say dito on the avoiding streams creeks and other small waterways.

Re: discarding a carcas
Cut up bones with an ax or saw so they will fit in a large pot, roast in the oven till they are golden brown all over, you can put a few onions and carrots with em in the oven. Place in pot (large) cover with water.....perhaps include a bundle of thyme, a bay leaf, a few sprigts of rosemary and bring to a very soft boil. Simmer till it is reduced by half or 2/3's, pour off the liquid to a smaller pot and further reduce it till it is very concentrated. (Now you can get rid of the bones in the woods). Congratulations you have made a game based demi glace. Put it is small jars and freeze. When you make stew, soup, or sauces with game use some of this to give body and deep rich flavor.
I will get perhaps a pint and a half out of a deer!
Recipe for pan sauce for venison steak/duck breast using demi glace:
sear a deer or elk steak/chop till brown on both sides. turn a few times and place on a platter in a low oven (200-300 or so). It should be brown on the outside and more or less raw in the middle when it comes out of the skillet. Turn the steak a few times as you let it finish cooking slowly in the oven to rare or med rare (however you like it). Turn off the oven and open the door letting the steak rest. Meanwhile splash some wine, whiskey or sherry in the skillet and get all the cruncy bits loose from the pan, add more if you need a bit more liquid, reduce it down a bit and add demi-glace (if you made is strong enough 1-3 tablespoons is plenty). While shaking the pan, drop in a tablespoon of butter and whisk it into the sauce, serve the rare to med rare steaks in a pool of the pan sauce....eat steak, use good bread to mop up sauce, drink wine.....this is a good dish for date night!
I use most of my game bones. When you have a few large animals in a year, freeze the unroasted cut up bones into batches and process them over a few months. The demi-glace will last years frozen....I still have a few half-pint jars from the year I killed and elk/a caribou/an antelope and a deer one year.
