Default Tuna out of brookings

Just recieved a report from a friend that Tuna are 12-14 miles out due east of Brookings. I will heading down there next week to try some chinook fishing and want to give tuna a shot. One of the guys with me is an experienced tuna fisherman but out of San Diego. I am assuming gear used for yellow tail will work for Albacore? Can anyone give me some pointers on fishing the waters around Brookings? The buoy 16NM west of Port Orford is reading a water temperature of 62 degrees. I take it I go until I hit 61 degrees and start trolling?

Thanks,

Thunderstruck

Due east...that would be about Loeb state park on the Chetco, right?

OK I'm sure you meant west!

Do a search here on tuna gear...there are a whole bunch of posts.

It's not just about temperature, it's about rapid temp breaks, baits, birds, & other signs. Don't over-run the fish looking for some magical temperature.

I always start trolling at 59.1 degrees if everything looks good (e.g. temp breaks, birds, water color, breaking fish!, etc...).
good luck,
steve

If you wait until you hit 62* water, you are passing the bigger fish. Start at 59* if it's blue and clear. You bigger fish will always be in the cooler water, but your numbers will be in the 61* and higher water temps. I will be heading out of Crescent City tomorrow and most likely be working my up to Brooking at about 20 miles out unless the water temp says other wise. The swell was 2.6 ft. at 17 seconds this afternoon with no wind. It doesn't get any better than that. It should hold through tomorrow night and possibly through Sunday as well.
