wickiup waterfowl
nice day for a walk today, so i spent the day at wickiup. lot of coots, a few widgeon, a few mallards, a few buffle heads, a few scaup, a few golden eye. 1 speck and a lot of western canadas. water level is perfect for boat hunting and big decoy spreads. little ice in the bays. it is at the balance point, good water but low duck numbers. but no pressure and the mallards where working the bays. and the canadas are IN. probaly this time till it closes the 30th is the best time to hit it before ice over

Re: wickiup waterfowl
Sounds like fun. What an awesome place to shoot a few birds--mt vistas and high mt habitat. Hard to beat that!

Re: wickiup waterfowl
Hit it twice about a week and half ago. Not very many birds at all, except coots, and some geese. Was stuck on shore. As you said water level is great for cover and decoys. WE need some birds to move into the area maybe this cooler weather will help. It definitely is a unique place to hunt.

Re: wickiup waterfowl
wickiup is a slow hunt at the best of times. an all day in one blind with lots of decoys type of hunt or hiking the flats for a few birds here and there. should have seen it durring the drought years. 4 duck limits in minutes, then several hours of sitting in pit blinds waiting for geese.

Re: wickiup waterfowl
I was thinking about heading up to either Crane or Wickiup this weekend but noticed that you were saying it closes on the 30th. Are the roads to the lakes being closed, or what do you mean by that? What would anyone recommend with a medium to small sized boat with a couple dozen decoys?
Thanks.

Re: wickiup waterfowl
Ok, yeah I knew that duck season was closed then, thanks for the reply. Maybe I will head up there the later part of this week to do some scouting before the weekend.
Thanks.
