Default Clamming in Newport

Which clams are used for 'steamer clams' and where would you go to dig for these. Thanks for any info that might help!

Cockles and Butter clams. I am not sure where to dig them in Newport but just follow everyone on a minus tide.
I know that we raked up easy limits near the Coast Guard pier in Garabaldi on a minus tide.
Good luck

You can go for cockles on the flats right by the gas plant. Just take the bay road towards Toledo out of Newport and you can't miss the plant....big Green tank sittin out there. Anway lot of people hit that....Good luck to ya

I have not clammed Yaquina Bay, but while crabbing I see a lot of clammers working Idaho Flats. This area is east of the Marine Science Center and exposed on most low tides. You can drive to within a hundred yards. According to the indian midden at the NW corner of the flats, the clams have been there for awhile.

Earlier this year on a big minus tide I noted about 40 people working just under the bridge on the south side of the bay; but I think they were after the big 'uns, not steamers.

I used to clam a lot when I was a kid, mostly after eastern softshells; but I can't find ammo for my clam gun any more. Good luck, have fun!
