Prop damage
Well I got a diver down this afternoon and the report is as I'd hoped for. Only the starboard prop was dinged up from striking that log yesterday. No damage to the shaft or other gear. I'm going to call and probably order a new prop tomorrow, and have the new one put on when they take the old one off...then will get the old one repaired and save as a spare.
Soooo, it's not as bad as it could've been. The boat is still usable as long as I keep the starboard engine down below about 2000 RPM's where it starts to vibrate. As long as I keep the vibration out, shouldn't hurt the shaft or bearings.
So, if I can run a near-shore tuna trip this weekend I might depending on what the seas and weather do the rest of the week. Looking at tonights SST, I'd almost be willing to bet on tuna within 10 miles of Depoe Bay.

Re: Prop damage
Has anyone had any dealings with Sheffield Marine Propeller Inc in Portland? I've had a few people (charter boat operators) suggest them for a prop and repairs. Just trying to see if anyone here is familiar with them?

Re: Prop damage
I have had dealings with Sheffield over the last 6 years or so. They built a new propeller shaft, reconditioned the propeller and rudder the first time. Subsequently I needed a larger rudder, so they cast one from a pattern that they had and it works great. Always have provided good service and work.

Re: Prop damage
I'd be careful about using the prop even if you can't feel the vibration. It is still out of balance and shafts and bearing will be stressed even though you can't feel it in the seat of your pants. True enough, lower rpms will cause less problems than higher, but it is still a wear producer. How long does it take to get a new prop?

Re: Prop damage
You might want to call Jim at Propeller Works in Portland 503-657-7673. He has done several charters in Ilwaco, commerical fishing boats and is doing work for the Coast Guard. He is worth the call. Have fun. I am still a wannabe Albie slayer, but will get there this season. Your posts are great!! Have fun and be safe.

Re: Prop damage
John - The old prop is bronze. It doesn't sound like it's repairable...but may check it out elsewhere.

Re: Prop damage
Well, ended up ordering a new prop this morning. The old prop is irrepairable as there was also a crack down low on one of the flukes.
Will pick the new prop up friday and get the diver back down either one morning on the weekend, or maybe friday afternoon to put it on.
I hope this doesn't happen much if ever again. Gets rather spendy replacing with new props.

Re: Prop damage
Nancy, brass, right?
Ampro in Clackamas does fine work. I had several brass props for the old white Merc 40 horse done when it was still around. They weld or braze and then form, mill and balance to the correct shape.
Typical $ for the Mercruiser aluminum prop is $70 and they get it done in a week or less. Don't toss the old wheel 'til they can look at it, you might be able to save it.

Re: Prop damage
Well, got the new prop today. The one that I'd ordered through Sheffield Props hadn't come in, and was more expensive than I really wanted to spend, so made a call to West Coast Props in Warrenton. They had exactly what I wanted/needed in stock, in bronze, and for $100 less than what had been ordered from Sheffield, so I made a quick trip out to Warrenton and got it.
They were VERY helpful there, and I'd highly recommend them if anyone needs any prop work done. They even cupped the new prop for no extra fee for me. I got the recommendation for them from Ken Serven at Serven Marine in South Beach. Ken has done a lot of work for me in the past and I trust his judgement. He was right on with these guys.
While out there, I had them take a look at the old prop and they too say it's irreparable as it's cracked in 2 spots and would not be trust worthy to be fixed. So, I guess it ends up as a wall ornament.
Having the diver come back up on Monday to put the new prop back on, and Sea Jypzee will once again be back in action on the big blue.

Re: Prop damage
Nancy, If your looking for more spares (not knowing the particulars of your prop) I've had really good luck finding props for my outboard on ebay. For the most part the go for a fraction of what you can get them retail. Just a thought.

Re: Prop damage
Bull - thanks for the suggestion. I went and did an ebay search through the props they had listed, and my prop isn't in there anywhere.
They're 16x19 bronze with 1.25" shaft 3 blade. I may keep an eye on ebay for if a pair of them come available in the future though.
Thanks again

Re: Prop damage
The Sea Jypzee is officially back in action and ready to fish.
Got the prop put back on this afternoon and took it out for a quick sea trial. No vibration and all is well once again.
Have a TUNA trip set up possibly for thursday if the weather and ocean cooperate. At this point with the current forcast, I'd say it's 50/50 at this time.

Re: Prop damage
Well, due to a scheduling conflict, thursdays trip is out for me. :depressed: I forgot about an appointment I had for thursday morning up in Portland that took 3 months to get. I can't reschedule it and wait another 3 months.
Soooo, the plan at this point is to make a tuna run from Depoe Bay on Saturday morning. May make another Sunday as well depending on how things go Saturday.
Dean - Will send ya an email update as time gets closer. You interested in running wing with us? Leaving Depoe Bay about 05:30 probably.

Re: Prop damage
Appointment? What's three months, anyway? After all, this is TUNA! season.
Just kidding. Actually, we're glad to hear you're back on the water.

Re: Prop damage
Yes Nancy..........I'm interested. I have no plans as of yet. Would probably be best to vector into your route from Newport and meet you at the spot?

Re: Prop damage
Skein - Yes, I understand. But I figured what's one day away from fishing. Was a moment of insanity is my defense.
Dean - OK, that sounds good. I've got a full crew for Saturday set up. Not sure yet about sunday. Have an email out to possible crew for sunday, otherwise I may have to just post some open seats.
