Default 6/0 Hook In Finger

In my lifetime I've had broken bones, deep cuts with knives & broadheads, and dislocated body parts........painful yes, but the other day, while releasing a fish, without my gaff, Rod, I miss my gaff, a 6/0 barbed hook pierced through my index finger, hit the bone and curved upward, becoming completely imbeded.......you say no big deal? Well, the fish still attached to the lower hook decided to make a run for the bottom, this is where the real pain began. My cutting dikes were on the other side of the boat, out of reach, so I tried to guide the fish around the stern, grab the dikes and now the fish begins to spin circles! This fish was completely going crazy, ripping deep into the flesh of my finger and moving that dang hook in every which direction in my muscle tissue. I was finally able to cut the line between the two hooks and look at the damage. All I can say is gruesome. The second terrible part is the hook was barbed, as I was halibut fishing in shallow water off Lookout. Point of the story, you never want this to happen to you! It was so painful, words don't do justice. I had to have x-rays before the hook was removed. The hook was removed successfully, although I was real close to causing some major damage. Be careful out there!

Reminds me of a couple of years ago out TUNA fishing with my youngest son ...
He pulls in a big TUNA that we took on a Rapala plug that has BIG double treble
hooks. As the fish is thrashing around I can just see these nasty hooks sinking into
his hand. "Give me that fish before you get hooks stuck in your hand" says I. He
starts to hand the fish to me. The fish starts thrashing. He's worried about a
hook in the hand (after all, I'd JUST said something to that effect). He drops the
fish just as I am grabbing it. Big old barbed treble hook sinks into the "pad"
of my middle finger. Owww!! Fish thrashes some more. Now the hook exits my middle
finger just behind the finger nail ... the hook is stuck clean through my finger,
and the barb is still in there *somewhere*!!

I drop to the floor in agony. The TUNA! is laying on the deck thrashing. I yell at the
boy to grab something and club the fish. I've got several gaff/clubs on board, but he
picks up a pair of channel locks!! Wham, wham, wham!!! "OK", says I, "now you've killed my HAND, try to hit the dammed fish!"

I tried using my dikes to cut the lure off'n my hand, but the hooks on that RAPALA
were strong, SS hooks! Did I mention that they were also big? I couldn't cut
the hook. No way, no how. So I look at my 13 year old son and tell him something
to the effect that HE'S driving us home! From 32 miles out. Kinda hard to drive with
an eight inch rapala that has two sets of trebles hanging from your hand!

I now carry two sets of side cutters that will cut *anything*!!

I feel your pain, brother!!

I once had to pull a Alvin single hook out of a guys tricept! That was more disgusting than having it done to myself. We had no ***** that could cut the hook so I had to push it through and pinch the barb and pull it back out the way it came!
Another time I was unhooking a Springer in the channel that my buddy hooked into. It was his friends boat he had borrowed and did not want to come off anchor and float. Needless to say, everytime the fish got near the boat the current would rejuvinate the fish and he would make a run. I could not convince him to drift so we would not be fighting it as much. Anyway, the fish came up next to the boat I grabbed the spreader and unhooked the weight, at least I was not going to take that in the side of the head. My "friend" doesn't realize all his actions have a cause and effect to them. I am trying to tell him to keep the line out away from the side of my head and since I am the one doind the unhooking I am in charge. He decided to argue with me and tell me he needs to pull it as close to the boat for some odd reason. I just push the line away from the side of my ear when the fish decices to run. The pressure from the fish to the rod tip places the line tight against my hand when the spreader slides by. It was like a hot knife through butter. Right below the top knuckle through the meat down to the bone there appears a jagged fillet where my finger used to be. It was so cold out the blood did not start flowing instantly and I got a good look at the inside of my finger.
I ran to the front grabbed the T.P. and wrapped it up and finished netting the fish. After the NATIVE was released, I procedded to get sick out of the side of the boat. That is something I hope never happens again.

When I saw the 6/0 hook... title, I thought it might be the guy we saw on Saturday out of Winchester
This boat approaches us and asks if we have any pliers with cutters. Tells us that they dropped their only pair overboard when the hook embedding took place  The hook went through the palm of his hand below his pinky. Hand them one of 3 pairs I keep on board, and proceed to watch the surgery.
I guess the hook was through far enough that they wanted to cut what was poking through to have minimal contact Just hearing the "snap" of the hook being cut was enough to make us cringe One hook removed and they were back to fishing
They even waved at us the next day, glad we were around to help. The boats were pretty scattered in the afternoon, so looking for help could not have been easy.
Not fun, that is as close as I want to be to a situation like that.

I also feel your pain!!!

I took my father out fishing for ling cod a few years ago. He swore that his teardrop lead jigs w/ two LARGE trebble hooks would out fish my herring/mooching rig set up. He got one in the upper teen poundage. I threw it in the back of my dory between the side and the engine and went for the jig. As I reached..........yeah, you guessed it........it started thrashing and got BOTH trebbles in my hand and would not settle down. No one could get to me because of the motor...I had no club handy in that back corner etc. etc. I finally backed out of the corner dragging the fish by my hand and hooks where someoone could help me.

I also know another dory fisherman who had a coho throw the hooks as he was going to net it. As the diver, flasher, & hooks sailed past, one of the hooks caught him in the part of nose that divides your nostrils!!!!! They couldn't get it out even though it was pinched barbs so he had the guy cut the leader and he finished his limit. THEN came in and drove himself to Tillamook to the ER and had it removed. NOW that's a true fisherman!

Reading that story made my head throb and finger hurt. I like that idea of Fish Assassins having those big cutters handy. After this note I am heading out to the shop and grab my rebar pliers and put them in my tackle box. Those babies will cut when called upon.

Oh man I feel your pain. This is one reason to keep a sharp knife on your side all the time, ready and available to be deployed. 999 time out of 1,000 you would never need it, but..............there's that one time. hope the healing goes smooth

Nope, I don't have a story that even comes close, and for that I am very very glad!

Considering how much it hurts to just get poked by a hook, I never want to have a swinging fish hanging off my hand (or nose?).

Well, I put in my stories about metal. What about bone or spikes? I have had a few of those too! Bottom fish, shad bones under the fingernail (now I know what bamboo feels like). Natural spikes aren't fun either!
Funny thing is, this is one of those topics that makes everyone yelp in pain for the other guy, yet we still keep reading and adding to it.
