Default Thank you salty dogs! NOT!

On wed. august 6th I went on my first tuna adventure. we bagged 10. We only used handlines.. Was the most fun fishing I think I have had EVER!

Thurs. the 7th. Went back out with some friends This time we used rods.. Can you say OH YA BABY!!

And ever since then.. it has been tuna.. tuna.. The salmon may be biting but they are not Tuna.

I stare at the forecast for hours just wanting it to change.. I look at the SST maps just hoping for the warm water a few miles closer.. There is no cure.. and so I must say you people, you fellow ifishers are Evil.. You have bestowed on my a curse.. the curse of the tuna and it is never going to go away...

(Read in a Tim Curry - like voice)

Welcome to the dark side. Now you realize that those non-tuna catchers can not possibly understand you. There is no way back. From now on, in order to survive, when you are not actually fishing for tuna or eating your own tuna, you WILL obsess about the next tuna trip.

Attempting to leave the dark side by invoking Rod's 12 step program is futile, as no one has ever survived it, outside of a mental institution.

CorriRod's 12 step program:
-----------------------------

Tunaholic 12 Step Program

Tunaholic Serenity Prayer:

”God grant me the serenity to accept the fact I cannot go out for tuna today, the courage to live another day without tuna, and the wisdom to know they will come again.”

12 Steps To Recovery

1) Put the poles down and slowly back away.

2) Stop hiding lures in various places thru out the house.

3) Never mistakenly call your spouse "Tuna" during lovemaking.

4) As hard as it is to believe, not everyone enjoys tuna fishing.

5) Selling your car in order to buy more gas to go tuna fishing is not recommended.

6) There are other fish in the sea, I think .

7) Leaving work daily to get home and accept packages from UPS/FedX is wrong.

8) No more telling your spouse the truck broke down while you were out fishing so you'll have to stay another day, or in extreme cases a week.

9) If extreme withdrawals have set in, for instance random "hook setting" while at work or home, or making the zzzzzzzzzzzz sound constantly, do not let the tunaholic near any fishing articles like magazines, fishing gear, or boats as that will make matters worse.

10) Tuna fishing is not a replacement for eating.

11) Unlike AA, recovery should be made away from other tunaholics. Gathering tunaholics will only create more problems.

12) It is not acceptable to miss your child's birth because you were out tuna fishing. (My wife told me that one)

I admit that tuna is great eating and have heard it's great to catch, but the actual presentation of the meat can't compare to salmon. Sorry, but it ain't the same gig in tha area.

I know they're a blast to catch and all, but the sashimi I had tonight for an appetizer, of the salmon I caught this Satureday will suffice for me...Some day I my be lucky enough to see what I'm missing....Till then Silver/Kings all the way.

On a family day off, I found myself at Englunds looking at 200# leaders, TUNA coord, big hooks, clones and zuckers. I told my family I was there to buy materials for crab pots.

I now look at larger tupperware boats and think, "That's a TUNA boat!" or "I wonder how big the fuel tank is on that and what it's fuel consumption is."

Why do I spell TUNA in all caps?

TUNA ain't Salmon and Salmon sure ain't TUNA.

TUNA! WD you are a TUNA junkie. You will spend the rest of the year collecting Tuna trinkets here and there. Handlines will adorn your Christmas tree along with the festive colors of Zukers, clones, feathers, fishtraps, and dive plainers. Obviously you need serious help my friend.

Drooling over tupperware boats is not all that bad.

I grew up in Astoria and never had the opportunity to go tuna fishing, almost did one time but the guy backed out at the last minute. Now I live here in Idaho and live vicariously through you guys on the Ifish board. Yes I still dream of being out on the high seas catching those albi's, maybe next year will have to save up enuff money and take the trip of a lifetime with Capt Kujo.

Having been a salmon and steelhead fisherman most of my life and catching and eating my fair share of the above I must jump in here. I guess you can call me a fishingholic. I buy gear when I have too much already. I have tackle boxes stuffed in cabinets that I can't even remember. I have salmon gear coming out my ears, steelhead gear most shops would love to have in inventory. Now all that changed years ago when I caught my first albie. Not only did I hook that albie it hooked me, for life. To those who say they would eat salmon and steelhead over fresh albacore, well, I am not one of them. When I bring home chinook, coho, halibut and steelhead it is like here is Dad again with his catch. But when I bring home fresh albacore the family immediately starts to divy up the prize. Questions like, how many 1/2 pints of canned tuna can I get to take back to college Dad? Are we gonna BBQ tonight? Is that all you brought home? Do you think 5 or 6 extra cases of 1/2 pint canning jars will be too many on top of what we have already? Tuna gear is at my shop, at my home and at my beach house. I order it out of catalogs, off the internet, at Englunds, Harry's, Fishermans, where ever whenever. We just canned up our catch from Sunday. I can't wait to get back out there for more.

Driftr - you have a real problem there.

In fact, you all have a problem.

Just because *I* refuse to buy canned TUNA from the store doesn't mean that I have that same problem.

Just because I had 13 cases of canned TUNA done after only my first trip out this year doesn't mean I have a problem.

Just because I have enough TUNA gear on my boat to run about 15 handlines (already made up) doesn't mean that I have a problem.

Just because I just spent another $30.00 at Englunds on more TUNA gear doesn't mean I have a problem.

Just because I check the SST's and Marine weather forcast from work 2-4 times/day, and call in fishing instead of going to work doesn't mean that I have a problem.

Nope, I'm not a TUNA addict at all. But all of the rest of you are addicts!

Sea Gypzee,
Do you have a stainless steel crimping tool? Don't have to wash it down after every trip, don't go to sea without one.
Rootbeer Zukers? Killers behind the Yo boards.Only produced three albies but a "Must have".
Yo-Zuri splashers? Never seemed to work but at $24.00 needed some anyway.
Yo-Zuri Diving boards? Really work good but a bear to handline in going 6 knots checking for weeds.
Aussie swivels? Never have to buy another one the rest of my life. But I hear their on sale somewhere.
64 quart Igloo cooler converted into a offshore tackle box? Never have enough room.
Two 150 qt. Igloo coolers? Need a bigger truck.
Can you stop buying bungie cords?
Oh, I even have one Yo-Zuri dving board still in the wrapper with the price tag on. One new splasher, I can't find and brand new.
We must be CRAZY. New GUSA custom built single piece rods with Aftco lighweight roller guides. Then I went and broke one new rod bottom fishing. Ever tried to unwrap a 200 foot leader coil of 200 lb leader material all at once? Don't. I have now got 10 new leaders 20' in length and have to store them someplace. Need to get to Englunds for more materials I think.

Yeah, and the inclination to ask complete strangers "You ever TUNA fished?", then proceed to tell them everything they need to know to do it....

...Or go out salmon fishing in your new boat, and think of it as a shake-down for a TUNA run.

Tuesday - nice calm day - I thought, "Man, wouldn't this be a day to run to Tuna Town."

Wednesday - bad, lumpy day - I thought, "Man, I'll bet nobody's running out to Tuna Town today."

Tuna Town, Tuna Town, Tuna Town.

What's going to happen to me when I finally catch one?????

Have run out on the big blue twice now to about 10-12 miles...looking for good chinook water. Yeah...that's the ticket...trying to find chinook. Not even thinking about just putting the pedal down and seeing if we can find some TUNA all by ourselves with a single engine.

Have to make myself leave the TUNA gear ashore until I can find the right day and a running mate. Maybe next week.

Hope she lays down and gives me one good day......
