10 Aug 03 / B10, B2, B1, CR and beyond...
That's right, fished everywhere. Put 50 miles on the boat Sunday just fishing for salmon.
Put in at Warrenton about 5:30 am and headed for the bar. It was a little early yet so we stopped at buoy 22 and mooched a bit for a Chinook. Nothing happening there, and the boats just kept flying past us as if tides don't matter, so we put up the rods and headed out to where the real fishing is.
Skipped out passed the SJ buoy at 7 am to find an easy ocean with maybe 2' swells and a little chop. So far the weather forecast and buoy report was right on. Came up on Buoy 2 and found one guy there with a fish on. Slammed on the brakes, dropped down the divers, and... nothing. Put up the rods again and aimed for the CR. Didn't even need the GPS - we could see it.
When we arrived, we found boats everywhere but they were scattered, and from the chatter on the radio so were the fish. We slowly headed west until we came upon two boats with fish on in about 210' of water. Dropped down the divers with one rod at 10 pulls and the other at 15 and continued to troll west and still... nada. Saw others catching a few fish around us, but we just couldn't seem to get it together. We were using fresh herring on EZ divers and varied the pulls from 8 to 18 but couldn't even get a take down. At last, someone on the radio gave us a clue. They were into a lot fish at 260' of water over on the Washington side.
We took off and headed northwest about 4 miles until we hit 260' of water and began trolling the outside edge of a more concentrated group of boats. Finally, we began to get some hits but they were biting light and stealing the bait. That's when I dropped down to 21 pulls and "wham" a real take down. It was about a 12 lb silver with a fin and so we shook him off. From that point on we began to catch some really nice Silvers, but the natives were outdoing the hatcheries by at least 5 to 1. If you fished any less than 20 pulls you were too shallow. We switched one rod over to a Coyote spoon to save on bait. It did OK but this time the bait out fished the Coyote by about 2 to 1. We kept two Silvers for two rods and both weighed 11.5 lbs. We could have kept more. We caught no Chinooks. The best fishing for us was at 290' but only if we trolled NW against the current.
At 12:30 I checked the GPS and found that we were 11 miles NW of the CR. Far enough for an 18' boat even on a good day, so we headed back. Came back across the bar and stopped to fish Buoy 10 at 2:00. The tide was just starting to go back and we fished for a while anyway but no bites. Talked to the fish checker at Warrenton and she said she only saw one fish come in from B-10 all day.
So, I’m curious. Any of you Ifishers fish the CR Buoy this weekend? I’m sure you didn’t have to go as far out as we did to catch some nice fish. In fact, when we came back past B-2 there were a couple of boats there, and one of them had a fish on.

Re: 10 Aug 03 / B10, B2, B1, CR and beyond...
fished #2 just about all morning, couldn't believe all the boats going past us! WOW the roughest part of the day was all the boat wakes, forget the ocean! We had fish on all day and most of the time it was tough getting two rods out at the same time....You guys just keep going out to CR and I'll keep that little section of the ocean to my self? acctually I'm done! I hate fishing delta divers for Coho, has to be the most boring fishing around? My wife was sooo board she slept for three hours and didn't even want to get up to fight/land fish...."why are we out here for these little fish with all these boat wakes slapping us around?". Does eveyone feel they have to drive within 20 yrds of #2 on the way out? I'd keep pushing people towards the buoy as they'd come-out just to see what they'd do....they just kept getting closer & closer to my boat? Anyway have fun and I'll see you on the "river"!

Re: 10 Aug 03 / B10, B2, B1, CR and beyond...
Just back from 2 days fishing the ocean with my brother and a friend of his. Here is the rundown:
Sunday: NW of CR buoy with moderate seas, landed and released 10 native Coho salmon, kept 6 (limit), 3 Chinook weighing 15, 25 and 35 pounds (not mine) and 3 average size clipped Coho.
Monday: Rough seas and strong wind at 260 feet NW of CR, Landed and released 12 native Coho, kept only 2 clipped Coho.
All in all a pretty good 2 days.

Pop's and Duckcall just called from the CR bouy. Pop's nailed a 30lbr and a nice 9 lb ho. Duckcall go two really nice ho's. Turned back a ton of natives around the CR. Nice ocean to boot. I am ready for Saturday.

Re: 10 Aug 03 / B10, B2, B1, CR and beyond...
Fair reports. We headed west to the CR and beyond. Got out at about 7:30 with little action till around 10:00. We saw a few coho picked up here and there, then I discovered a bunch of fish on my computer at about 100 to 130 ft. dropped the downriggers ASAP and whamo. Big coho and chinook. For the next two hours every drop on the way down was a fish on with downriggers at about 90 to 100 ft. They were hiding down in the cooler shade. When the fish disappear on the surface, look deep for hiding and near structure. More fish seem to be N.W. of CR between 190 ft. deep and 260 ft. deep.
Good fishin!
