Coyote Hunting
Just out of curiosity, what is the closest you have called in a coyote and shot it. I know my grandpa called one in for me and i shot it at 5 yards. He told me to wait till it stopped and it never did. But i was only 12 then, 14 now, I shoot them at 15 yards now

Re: Coyote Hunting
I think the closest was about 3 feet off the end of my barrel. Even had powder burns on the fur.

Re: Coyote Hunting
3 feet, now that's getting close! My closest was probably 15 yards, head on, he caught a .270 90 grain hollow point! It did not pass through, but boy did that dog stink!
Now, I have called in mad Does to within arms reach, I was afraid I was going to get kicked!

I had one jump over me [which I did not get btw] when my husband was calling them in a few winters back. The closet I've shot one was at about 20 feet.

I had all fur in my scope once. Heard some rustling behind me. Turned and pulled up and shot the obvious target. Hit the arse....spun him HARD!
I don't know, 10 feet? Call really worked.

Sounds like Rusty has Monroe and me both beat! I always have said that hunting coyotes falls into the law of 1/3's. 1/3 is calling them in, 1/3 is getting a shot and the last 1/3 is hitting the darn things!

Re: Coyote Hunting
Well, truthfully, the closest yote I've seen in my largely unsuccessful predator career was at probably 900 yards out at the ifish hunt last spring. Hoping to shorten that distance this winter in the white river area.

Re: Coyote Hunting
Well, I'm thinking the wildlife area. With the herds wintering there I figure predator populations are probably pretty high as well. Maybe a kitty or two around there too.

Re: Coyote Hunting
I once pulled up to a landing, let my dog out, looked over the edge and thought to myself, "This looks like a good place for a coyote". One blow and there we were...all three of us on the landing. My dog and Mr coyote are growling and circling each other oblivious to me. Me, in my infinate wisdom, had remember the wounded rabbit call but left the rifle in the truck. Im gonna guess I was 10 yards from the dogs, and they were just feet apart from each other. One yell at my dog to "cmere" and that broke the trance they had on each other. By the time I got the rifle out of the truck, coyote was long gone. Man my dog was mad at me.

I remember once while calling after dark in Jackson county having one nose right up to one of my partners, probably trying to scent us. #4 buckshot ended his investigation, but what a hole!

Re: Coyote Hunting
I was calling with a mouth blown call near Las Vegas with my partner and wasn't paying attention. A coyote rushed in jumped on me trying to bite my face. I was using my rifle to block the coyote from biting me. I finally pushed him back a ways and point the rifle into his chest and shot point blank. The barrel of the rifle was only laying across his chest but the muzzle blast knocked him down. I stood up trying to chamber another round but the rifle jammed and the coyote trotted off.
I was hollering to my partner to shoot but he didn't. When I looked over at him he was laughing so hard he couldn't shoot. I didn't see the humor in it.
Another time my partner was blowing the call and a coyote came in from my extreme left stalking the sound. I was seated on the ground leaning against a Joshua tree. The coyote stepped over and between my legs to get to my partner. He was too close for me to shoot so I let him go thinking my partner would get the shot. He didn't. The coyote got away clean.
Most of the coyotes I shot last year were within 40 yards and all except one were within 100 yards. Some were as close as 15 ft.

Re: Coyote Hunting
I was watching one of those Primos Truth videos with Randy Anderson and they were calling in Arizona. They were calling in an open area with lots of low brush. As they called, a coyote came running in and ran head first into a hunter's chest. The hunter was screaming like a little girl and Randy Anderson was laughing his butt off. No shot was taken.
I'm more into the shooting than the calling, so If I get them within 300 yards or so, I take the first shot I get.

Coyote numbers in Eastern Oregon and Northern Arizona are way down this year. No one is sure why but the rumors are running from Parvo to the heavy snowfall last winter. All I know is that the calling is slow this year.

Re: Coyote Hunting
I used to coyote hunt a lot when I lived in Central Oregon. I had one come in from the side and take a nip at my face. I was wearing a grey ski mask since it was only about 10 degrees that day. I was making squeak noises with my mouth to try to coax one that was just out of range in a little closer. I guess the squeaks worked a little too good.
I screamed like a girl and spooked both of them off.
I used a 12 guage with #4 buckshot, You had to get them fairly close to get a kill. But that was just a little too close.

I don't know... I managed 38 of them in 5 days of calling last year. Friends who live and call a lot on the east side have noticed the same thing. But maybe I don't know where to go.

Re: Coyote Hunting
I truly hope you do get into them. It runs in cycles, tho. I have a friend who is one of the gunners when they do the aerial hunts and he said that they didn't get a single request this year.
Maybe there are more coyotes farther west than where we've been hunting. Who knows? Reports say that eastern Oregon and northern Nevada numbers are down. I certainly wouldn't stay home, tho. You just never know.

So the aerial gunning is upon the request of the private landowners? Just trying to understand how that works.
What you are saying sure mirrors my experience while over in Desolation.
Like you said, it might have been the deep snow or a disease. We will see as the guys start hunting the dogs harder in a few weeks. Westside we seem to be about on par, seeing a fair amount of tracks and piles.

Re: Coyote Hunting
I only know about one group doing helicopter hunts. It's strictly upon request. I've never been interested in doing this kid of stuff so I've never asked a lot of questions.
We have a lot of coyotes here on the wet side of the mountains.

Re: Coyote Hunting
Had a coyote jump up onto a narrow rock ledge I was sitting on while my buddy called above me. That coyote had the pretties eyes and coat without a hair out of place. He would look toward me, look up the hill, did it again and again until I knew he was not just going to keep walking in front of my barrel and I could pull the trigger while the gun lay in my lap. My legs and feet were tucked up under me and out of the shot and muzzle blast area. So I finally pushed the gun at him from about 3 ft away and was pulling the trigger at the same time and that guy moved over the hill so fast I couldn't even get the shot off. Nothing but air. Amazing 1-2 minute standoff.
