Default Upland report from today

Ran up to the upland arena today, figured i would give it a go. Hunted one of my favorite spots and was reminded why i bought a dog and how hard hunting wild pheasants without one is.
I eased out into the crp, hoping to put the sneak on the birds and get close enough for a shot, i got about halfway across the top end of the field when a hen busts loose right at my feet, then a rooster gets up....probably out of my effective range but i gave it both barrels anyways....and that was the mistake, directly after that as i am trying to reload the field explodes with birds.....2 roosters get up behind me at about 20yds....damn i walked right by those two i muse to myself as i drop the shell on the ground frantically trying to reload. As i close my gun up 3 more pheasants get up at about 35 yds....hens.....and of course these birds buzz across the area i haven't walked through yet...and about 15-20 more pheasants get up from the field and follow suit........hmmm...figures. I hop down by a creek and switch to target loads...quail time.... i fight my way through the thick cover, getting a few shots off here and there as quail explode everywhere.......the problem with these quail is finding a shooting lane through the dense cover...and not ******* your pants when they explode at your feet...then when you knock one down finding it in the cover..I manage to tag 6 despite my poor shooting. I cut up a dry creek bed chasing more quail and then got the break that i needed...roosted holed up in some cattails, i bust him. Then blow my chance at a limit when another one blows out as i retrieve the first....

All in all a good day in paradise.

So you say you bought a dog, but no mention of it here. What's up with that? I know my dog would be furious at me if I came home with birds and she did not get the chance to point and fetch.
Great day, despite not having the dog along. Congrats

This may explain why.

Call me next time. I'll tag along and, more importantly, I'll bring my dog!

I'm telling ya--ya gotta watch for those "lay birds!" Whever I flush quail I ALWAYS stay where I shot, while my dog fetches whatever I have down. Seems like a lot more often than not more will explode from the same stinkin' spot!! Learned that from my grandfather YEARS ago, at about age 12.
