late buck
So i went late buck hunting this last weekend in washington. Was hunting up near stevenson, wa in the washougal gmu. After hiking all day, we seen nothing. The last 3 hours of the day i hiked up this hill. Found a nice game trail with plenty of old sign, but nothing recent. It was getting really brushy and hard to keep moving quietly. I stopped on the edge of this little valley and decided to sit there for the remainder of the 3 hours. after an hour I heard something behind me move, and slowly turned around (i was sitting on a pile of leaves) not making any noise, but the critter was gone. i decided to stand up against this tree so i could see both directions. FInally the last 25 minutes of daylight were upon me and i heard something move. I saw a shadow, picked up my binocs and found a deer moving about 75 yards away. I instantly switched to my rifle scope and saw a little stub of horn sticking out. Which then turned out to be a nice rack. id say at least a 3 point, but with darkness falling it was really hard to tell. I hunted all season, and hunted hard. I spooked two bucks in the start of the season and this was the first buck i had in my scope. This was the first buck i would have ever shot at in my hunting career. The adrenaline pumping, looking through my scope i saw him sniff the ground where i walked up from and he decided he didn't want to be around anymore. so he started moving and i tracked him with my reticles ready to take my shot, but he ducked behind a tree, and not wanting to gut shoot him i followed in front of the tree, to find him behind brush. my chance for a kill quickly disappeared. I heard something behind me move in the brush, up the hill towards him and then i heard him snarl out in the distance. and that was it, the end.
I learned a very important lesson last night.
