Default Introducing Kids to Steelhead Fishing

I'm buying new rods reels and gear for my twin teenage boys this week for steelhead fishing. I figured it would be easier to introduce them by bobber fishing with jigs and/or bait. Both have been trout and warmwater fishing for years, but will be new to steelhead and salmon fishing. Does anyone know of any clinics, indoor or on the water that would be valuable opportunities for the boys to get some instruction and knowledge?
I really want them to enjoy this new aspect to fishing and my skills are pretty rough.

Well, I don't really know of any clinics per-say, unless you are fortunate enough to watch Ty fish a hole

I would suggest either head toward local waters and learn "the hard way" or hire a guide capable of taking all 3 of you. You will all learn some very valuable lessons. You may even discover that they will enjoy different ways of fishing (ie drift gear, spinners, or floats) then you can get them gear (rods & reels) to fit what they like. I dunno, just a couple of suggestions!
When my dad & I "discovered" steelheading we both spent a lot of time learning...I didn't pick up things like he did, but I was only 12. He caught a few steelhead that first year while I only watched. I still really enjoyed spending those cold, damp, fishless days doing something cool with my dad.

Good Luck! This kind of behavior needs to be encouraged!

Flathead,

Bobber & Jig is a great way to learn and have a good good chance of getting into a fish.

1) there is plenty of good info on this board to tell you some of the do's & don'ts. And lots of the preferences for rod's & reels.

2) The local tackle store will give you good info on how to rig up ect.

3) Some good videos out there you might watch first to see what they are using and what to look for in the drifts's

Good luck!! i love to hear of people getting their kids into fishing.

Bob
