Default 175 Sport jet Fuel pump mod completed! (Pics Added)

I finally got around to doing the "Boat Doc" fuel pump mod with a one alteration. Instead of purchasing a momentary switch, I Tapped into my existing ignition switch so that when you push it in it turns on the fuel pump. The entire mod cost me about $7.85 in wire and connecters, and only took about 45 minutes to complete including all the ty-wrapping that had to be done. If your boat has the standard sport jet ignition switch then the yellow wire with the black stripe is the one you want to splice your 3 amp inline fuse and wire into. After that just simply run the single wire back to your engine. Once this is done unplug the red wire with yellow stripe from your electric fuelpump and plug in your new wire from your ignition switch. You must use bullet connectors of course!

Fish-Addict,

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the problem that this fixes? I have a new NorthRiver Sportster w/175 SJ and was curious if this problem can come up with my boat...

This mod takes care of the cold start problem that is standard with 175 sportjets. This mod allows you to prime your fuel line prior to starting.

Fish Addict'
I really appreciate your heads up on this. That goes way above and beyond the call of duty. What I call a true sportsman.Thank you.

In the same note I did the mod last sunday.I wanted to do it with the ignition switch. But didnt want to take a chance on it.Beings my skills were limited in that area.

I did put a nice looking momentary switch in the dash though.I took it down to the river and tried it.My boat has been sitting since Oct.and it started easier on a cold start than I ever remember.I hope you have the same results as I did .Well worth the effort.

Another big thank you to the Boat Doc for giving us the info on this.It doesnt take long to see why this board is such a great place to be a part of.

I am looking at doing this mod; any more input on whether this significantly helps cold starts? I am not that handy, so it may take me a few hours, so weighing the idea. Thanks.

I have found it to be a worthwhile modification. It seems to have reduced cold start time quite a bit.

I did this awhile ago, and it was simple!!! Great instruction by fish-addict. Hey F-A, how long do you "prime" the switch before you "turn the motor over"? I haven't noticed a huge difference, but I'm only hittin' the switch for a few seconds before "blast-off"! Thanks, snit

Average time has been around 8-10 seconds. If you listen you can hear the fuelpump loading up. Once the fuelpump has loaded up the system is primed. Continued cranking will only result in a flooded engine.

When you push the switch in can you hear the pump running priming the system?
What about the super simple hillbilly way, add a primer bulb between the fuel filter and the carbs? Would that work?
I know that when the boat sits for a extended period between trips it is a little:oat the ramp waiting to start and warm up enough to power off to the dock, and with a 4 stroke kicker that isn't going to get you any quicker.
Help.

I believe the primer bulb isn't Coast Guard legal? I've been told the primers are only for outboards, not inboards? That's why I went with the F-A fuel mod, and not the "redneck mod"

Yes you can hear the pump run, but I've only been priming for 3-4 seconds, so I'll double my "prime-time"

Thanks again!!!!

Something that I have been toying around with, is adding a 0-5 amp ampmeter panel guage to the power circut of the fuel pump. this would allow you to see when the fuel pump had primed the system by an increase in amperage draw from the pump.

Finally got around to checking out the wiring needed for this and have a few questions...

Do you leave this wiring as is or just put it in this configuration when starting?

Also, when does the red/yellow wire normally fire?

Just wondering how this mod affects the normal operation of the fuel pump.

Thanks!

I took mine out.Kept blowing fuses for the fuel pump. Was told by another mechanic that its also a good way to burn up your electric pump.
Dont know if thats a fact.Just what I was told.
I do know that I started having problems after I modified mine.Probably just coincidental, but I still felt better about going back to stock and taking a little longer to get a good cold start.

That mechanic also told me to hit the key, crank the engine for 15 secs.Turn key on without starting for 4 secs.Turn key off.Turn key on for 4 sec without starting, then fire it up.Seems to work for me.Leaving the key on for 4 secs lets the enrichner valve stay open so that fuel can get to your carbs.

He also said cranking on those starters for an extended time is what burns them up.
Once again, just my experience, and what I was told by a factory certified Merc mechanic. I hope you all have had better luck than me.
