What are the chances of ??

catching a salmon when targeting rockfish?

Just curious. I've seen it before when I was on a charter and hearing all this talk about the insane amounts of salmon being caught off our coast has got me curious.

It can happen. Apparently someone caught one yesterday? just off shore while fishing for rock-fish. If the water on the beach is warm enough, the salmon will be right there as well.

Caught one a couple of years ago on the rockpile
while bottom fishing. Nice little surprise about a 8 LB Coho.

If your fishing with bait it is more likely than with a jig, however salmon will hit jigs and flies from time to time.

2 weeks ago, we finished salmon fishing and geared up for bottomfish. I wanted to let some line off my reel and straighten things out. I dropped my shrimp flys and Mr. Twister into the water and before i get 10 feet I see a silver come up and engulf the twister!
Fought it up and released it. Went to try again and same result
When I dropped it the third time and had a drive by, i decided I'd wait til we got to the reefs!

I don't know around here, but up in Canada and Pug. Sound. they do a lot of jigging for Salmon. I go up there and get my gear about 5-10 ft off the bottom. I have caught a couple in oregon jigging for bottom fish, but never on purpose. Love to use the point wilson dart with a slight bend in the body when I am trying for Salmon.
