Eastern Oregon Elk Success
Here is the story and pictures a friend of mine (an occasional lurker here) allowed me to post from his recent hunt. 'Dang nice 6x6 and nice story.
Quote:
I was over in Eastern Oregon in one of my favorite places by the Strawberry Wilderness Area. I get a tag every three years.
I went over by myself Thursday night, scouted all day Friday, didn't see an Elk.
Saturday morning I hiked out a long ridge and finally spotted Elk about 3/4 mile away. I hiked up and down a couple steep ridges to get to about 800 yds (see the picture). I worked my way around to a place a spot that ranged out to just under 500yds, but lost sight of the bull. I found 2 other smaller bulls so I just waited for a while.
After about an hour and a half, the big guy showed. I didn't like such a long shot, but I couldn't get any closer.
I knew I hit him but he didn't go down. He stepped behind some brush and all I saw was his head, which is very small at that distance. I'm not sure where that next 300WSM round went. I was laying on my side on a pretty steep hillside so when I jacked another shell in, I slid down about a foot. Now I lost him completely from sight.
I decided I hit him hard enough the first shot so I took off to him. After about 45 min. of steep terrain, I got to where I though he was. I searched for him about an hour, and was beginning to think I was going to lose another branch bull (don't ask) when the brush 50yds in front of me erupted and off he goes. I took a second to get my heart rate back down to 210 bpm, and chased him for another 75 yds, he was limping hard, he stopped and presented me with the final shot.
Now it's about an hour till dark and 2 miles uphill to my truck. Other than the jubilation of getting the elk, I was wasted.
I did a bit of skinning and then headed out. My partner showed up early the next morning and I gave him the bad news. We spent the morning packing all the while wishing I'd brought my horses.

Congratulations to your friend. That ridge looks very familiar, like this past September familiar.

Re: Eastern Oregon Elk Success
Thanks for not speculating further about the location. He was most sensitive (as we all can understand) about that but was nice-enough to let us enjoy the story and pictures anyway. Don

Re: Eastern Oregon Elk Success
Actually, I already did thank him. I knew the story and pictures would be appreciated. And, since (like I said) he lurks here, he'll also be seeing your comments and your thanks.
