Default SW Oregon Spring Bear limited over the counter

So what does everyone thing about the new SW spring bear being limited over the counter? I'm confused, why would they do this and lose the $4.50 draw fee?

Probably because they have a huge Bear population on the south coast.

I like the idea of being able to put in for another hunt and still getting a SW tag. My question is, when can you apply for a spring bear hunt? Is it the 1st of January and if that is true then the tags will have been on sale for a month already and may be sold out.

Page 35 of the regs:

Tags will be available on a limited
first-come, first-served basis from Dec. 1
through March 31, or until the authorized
number of tags are sold, whichever comes
first. Note: Purchasing this tag prior to the
drawing eliminates your ability to apply for
other controlled spring bear tags or point
savers. Please refer to note section above.

Hunters purchasing a SW Oregon spring bear tag prior to the drawing will not be eligible to apply for other controlled spring bear tags or utilize the Point Saver
option for spring bear hunts. Hunters planning to apply for other controlled spring bear hunts or a Point Saver should wait until after the drawing to purchase a
SW Oregon spring bear tag. Please note there is a limited number of SW Oregon spring bear tags available.

You guys should really read the regs....

You can start buying way before the application dead line..However if you purchase your bear tag before you can't apply for points. If wait to purchase after you find out about your application most likely all the tags will be sold out. Good If you like the coast bad if you like to hunt eastern oregon.

I would guess you will see a huge increase of people who will purchase those SW tags just to do it. If they go great if not no big deal.

IT"S NOT A GOOD THING

Lots of people were already doing that with the controlled drawing, but I agree they should have waited to sell the tags until after the drawing results were out.
