Default Electronics in the field-what is legal?

Recently, a couple of posts have made mention of being in contact with other party members via cell phone or 2 way radios, and the contact mentioned where animals were located.

I know it happens, but is it legal? And if it isn't legal, should it be mentioned in hunting stories on Ifish?

Legal, as long as it doesn't come from an aircraft. Boy, we sure are into the legal questions recently.

What should be illegal is stupid jibber jabber I hear on the radios, "Hey Bill, where are you?" "I am next to a tree. Where are you?" 25 feet above ya on the hill." "See anything yet?" "No. I wonder if Pete has seen anything run through camp." " I dunno, I wonder if he has breakfast ready." "I dunno, hey isn't Oregon State playing today..."

I thought that you could not communicate the location of animals via radios. Is this only from the air?

Per Oregon Regs page 21:

Q. Can I use walkie-talkies or cell
phones while hunting?

A. Yes, however it is illegal to communicate
information on the location of game mammals
from an aircraft.

might come into play if you are trying to get entered into a record book with a trophy animal

Our small hunting party went to RINO 530's and that totally cut all the, "Hey where are you," now we just poll each others location and look on the map display.

Just find the right sub audible tone and you won't hear very much from other hunters unless they find you channel and tone pair.

With 14 FRS channels and 38 tones you should find some quiet air

I agree after one full season those things are sweet.

Also humorous to use watching the person assigned to pick up the group take the wrong turn and drive away from you.

We use ham radios with DCS (Digital Coded Squelch). Basically, unless two radios are set to the same DCS channel you could be standing next to each other and never hear the other guy; you just stomp all over them. Not real nice, but sure makes for a quiet radio.

Stickfish's comment about setting the Channel and Code on the Rhino is similar; unless you're on the same Channel AND running the same Code, you don't hear each other. So, with about 532 combinations of Channels and Codes, you should be able to find something quiet.

This past weekend we left a Rhino in the rig so even if you get out and forget to set a waypoint on the truck's location, you can always find it simply by polling the location of that radio. Worked pretty sweet.

I know I love my Rino!! I just ordered the 520Hcx for the deep dark timbered canyons....

What is not legal is using a marine band vhf radio when you are on land. That's to the couple of fellas (hunters), out in woods above Bradwood, that have been using the marine band to yap on. One day, you're gonna get caught. I love my directional finding equipment. Easily, the best thing to come from the new CG Rescue 21 system.

Are you using Dopplar or a yagi?

Hawk, I tried that, but couldn't get the others to pony up and take the test. I have to say the RINO sure cut down on the number of things in my pack using batteries and the honking Li cell will run the GPS for a month. Easily lasts through a 5 day elk season if you're not a bucket mouth
