November 12th, 1970 -- Florence Oregon. Today is the 38th Anniversary! We're celebrating it in class today, thought I'd share the festivities with y'all.

I was born and raised in Florence and my granparents took me to watch the spectacle, my grandpa must have had a good idea what was going to happen because he parked a long ways away. I still remember trying to get him to move closer but when the touched the whale off and the blubber started flying I was glad we were as far away as we were. I still can't go to that beach and not get a good belly laugh.

We have a few friends down there that still have chunks in their freezers. They figured they might be worth a few bucks later in life. Now they are just conversation pieces. One guy even had a small bit freeze dried and he keeps it in a sealed glass box on the bookshelf, just so people wonder and ask about it.

I forgot about this but when I was in the USMC some Sgt Maj had this film clip to open a class he was teaching. After everyone finally picked themselves up off the floor they all turned to me and said "You're from Oregon, aren't you?"
When I said I was they all hit the floor laughing again.
Good times.....
