With halibut season, it almost guarantees nasty ocean conditions. It's just a natural event that the wind blows on every halibut day.

Ripin Lips, I plan to put my hairy eyeball on the scene. I'll likely wait longer than usual Saturday to wait out the ebb tide in Newport.
The forecast has been down graded wind wise and the wind waves as a result are forecasted to be smaller than they were earlier thought to be. I am hoping that the low pressure system will drift North earlier leaving better conditions in the South.
I have learned to go look. I have turned the boat around and headed back before and I will do it again. If I can't stand up there is no point in going. It just takes the fun out of it and it is hard on my equipment.

How the heck can ODFW predict the nasty weather days so far in advance when they're setting the halibut seasons? They're better than 50/50 at picking the roughest days of the summer.

OK, I just cancelled my Tuna trip for Friday.
I'm going with my hunch on this Southerly blow. This might be the best indicator for other boats
to go, it's likely to be like a bathtub out there
if I don't.

The current forcast is even better, downgraded again. I just got off the phone to a charter operator in Newport, wondering just how bad is bad. He said the wind from the south often lays the ocean down, it's the strong winds out of the northwest that gets the ocean rolling. He said today, the ocean is flat and expects the ocean to be calm tomorow morning and doesn't expect conditions to change much until Friday night. The current forcast calls for 15 kt winds if I remember correctly, that's a far cry from 20 to 25 kts. Bottom line is, you just never know about our fickel weather even with all the imagery available today.

I think tomorrow looks fishy to me, can you say halibut...!!!

Mel wont be on line for a few days. You might try to call him to confirm. It certainly looks much better and definitly a do for a tuna trip offf the columbia. Last time we went it was 3 and 4. 3 and 3 is nothing.
