Here's my fishing story....Finally
I have posted on your message board several times and no one has got on me about a story. Well, I figured it's about time to give it up.
When I was about 12 years old my family was fishing in the San Juan Islands. We were bottom fishing in a 34' time share boat. We got it 6 weeks a year(not a bad way to go by the way).My older brother went inside the cabin to use the bathroom and warm up with my parents, leaving me to watch his rod. We hadn't caught any fish all morning and all of a sudden his rod was jumping all over the place. I called to him and got no response (he was busy). My dad yelled for me to get it.
By the time I got my rod in a rod holder and got to his trolling rod it had all but doubled over. I started to pull the rod out and wasn't sure if I would be able to get it out. Finally, the rod came out and I realized that I was not strong enough to hold it. I started yelling for my dad to come. I was afraid to let go of the rod, but I was also afraid to get pulled into the ocean. Dad would have been ****ed either way.
Well, Dad finally got there and took the rod from me. He said something that was similar to Holy Cow. After dad started reeling (I hadn't thought to try that yet) and no line came in he started to wonder if I was just snagged on the bottom. He lifted the rod then reeled down, over and over and over. We finally determined that this was a fish and it was big. By this time the whole family was out there watching the battle. I was so excited I could hardly stand it and started wishing that I had kept fighting the monster fish. Well about that time the rod went limp and we were all disappointed.
Dad kept reeling to see what happened. Had the line broke? Did the fish straighten the hook? Maybe he just finally shook the hook. Nope. We would have prefered those options.
About the time Dad got the rock fish's head to the boat we heard the sea lion barking at us about 75 feet away from us.
That was when I decided that I didn't like sea lions anymore. Not only because he stole our fish, but he also played a measn trick on us.
I will say that things got better that day. I later hooked into a 15 lb red snapper AND I was able to pull it all the way up from the bottom of the ocean without a sea lion finding it on the way up.
