So I went fishing with a friend on the Willamette tonight in Lake Oswego. I haven’t posted much this summer because I haven’t been catching fish worth taking pictures of but tonight I had the ultimate fisherman’s story. My friend lives in Lake Oswego on the river by an island and we took a paddle boat across (to the island), walked to the downstream end and cast in. Two casts later I hooked the largest small mouth I have ever hooked off a rock ledge in about 25 feet of water. I landed him, took him off the jig and reached into my pocket for my phone to take a pic. Once I reached in my pocket I lost my balance on the wet rock and slipped off the end into at least 10 feet of water, Bass in one hand and rod in the other. Needless to say, at that point the camera phone was ruined and I was desperate to get back to the rock to pull myself out of the frigid water. I ditched the bass from my right hand and reached for the ledge. After pulling myself out and gutting the phone to dry it out my friend and I had a good laugh about how no one would ever believe that story. Oh well, it was a great night none the less. I wish I had some pics of my first November small mouth ever but just ended up with a bunch of wet clothes and a broken phone. Anyone else have a good “fisherman’s story?”
Yea, I held onto the rod no problem. It took my friend a while to actually come take it from me and help me out of the water because he was laughing so hard.
Ryan, I did the rice thing last night and the phone is working fine today which is nice. I also have insurance so I may just send it back anyway?
How big do you guestimate the smally was? 18''? 19"? Don't leave us hanging like this!
Good question. First you got to realize the vast majority of my smallie fishing is in smaller streams which tends to produce smaller fish. In other words, a really big fish to me may not be a really big fish to the Columbia or Willamette guys. My guess is that it was VERY close to or slightly larger than 18." The thing that was a little disappointing was that it didn't have near as much girth as I had expected for a fall fish getting ready for winter. When I first pulled it out I was shocked at the length and surprised that the the weight was less than expected. Then I fell in the water... I'm heading back out again Friday to see if he's still hungry. Hopefully I can get a pic next time.
