ouch! 300.00 halibut!
Just got back into work and a coworker told me about his weekend at newport. Great salmon fishing sat. Went to the pile sunday, and caught a mixed bag including a nice halibut. Got to the dock to clean it and Mr. gammie was there to let them know it was closed on sundays. 304.00 fine. That's alot of halibut from safeway. Some lessons are expensive. Keep up with those regs. They can be confusing at times.

Re: ouch! 300.00 halibut!
Unless he went to the ranch, the halibut fishing in less than 30 fathoms is open 7 days per week. The rockpile is well inside of the 30 fathom line.
"The recreational Pacific halibut fishery between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain remains open inside of the 30-fathom curve seven days a week."
Am I missing something?

I dont think the rockpile is inside the 30 fathom line. What I remember from the chart it was well outside it.

Ooops, you're right. It's inside the 60 fathom line. My bad.

30 fathom line, 60 fathom line, what's the big difference... probably about $304.

Re: ouch! 300.00 halibut!
Everyone missed the lesson here and that is that he was REALLY fishing inside the 30 fathom line just off the lighthouse. Wink, wink, nod nod. Remember your right to remain silent!!! and about self-incrimination blah blah blah. How's the trooper going to know what piece of Ocean it came from?

Hope that's not how we treat the fish and the regs.

Re: ouch! 300.00 halibut!
People have suggested that in the past, but never thought it was worth the risk of getting caught.
Remember to turn off the tracking feature on your GPS, or it could self-incriminate you too.

Re: ouch! 300.00 halibut!
Come on guys stay on the right side of the law, we may not agree with some of the regulations but we must follow them.
Or go to ODFW public meeting and loby for change, if you don't agree.
I truly hope that it is everybodys opinion that fishing is about the experience and friendship we share on the water, not just a meat hunt(that's what Safeway if for).

Re: ouch! 300.00 halibut!
I agree with Andy.
Stand up and set an example. We need to do what it takes to insure that this fishery is here for our children and future generations.
As far as the regs, know before you go or pay the price.
We released plenty of Halibut Sunday because we were beyond the 30 fathom curve.
I don't mean to come off as a preacher but to think that it is acceptable to duck under the line of the law and think that it is o.k., well that shouldn't be the message that we as Salty Dogs communicate or find acceptable.
Besides, Mother Ocean is watching and she WILL take care of business without mercy. Just a thought

Yep, the law is the law. If you don't agree with 'em change 'em. Until then abide by what's written.

Re: ouch! 300.00 halibut!
Not many of you know me but I joined because my brother said what a great bunch of guys and gals you are. I believe you are all honest and some are just joking about bucking the system. Remember these regs are why we have more and bigger fish these days. This does by no means mean they can't be improved, but they are working.
