Default rig for deep troll chinook??

I've been fishing out of newport a lot lately and have been limiting out on silvers and a some chinook. I've been marking a lot of fish near the bottom at 200'. When I try that level, I keep getting tangled up. I have been using a mooching rig on 6'leader with a flasher and 8oz cannon ball on a 12" leader just above the flasher. ANy advice would be appreciated.

Assuming you are trying to mooch, it sounds like your 8 0z is going down faster than your terminal gear and twisting everything up on the way down. Try going to a mooching (banana) sinker ( eliminating the 12" dropper). Try letting your line out on a troll to keep everything straight. Tend your line closely when you go to neutral, reeling up a couple of turns when you feel the bottom. If you are fishing a consistent 200 feet, you can use a majic marker on your line when you get there, to get you close next drop. Love mooching. Good luck, Billy

Try a halibut speader or drop the flasher from the mix. As Billy said, the better way is to use an in-line banana sinker for mooching.

Go with what Billy said. This last weekend all we used was a 8 or 10oz banana sinker and about a 3' mooching rig. Leave it in gear while you drop the rig down slowly so it doesn't come back up and wrap around the main line. When you start to get down where you want it put it in neutral and just go with the drift, you may have to back down on your rig if the drift is too fast. We went 9 for 10 on chinook and 1 silver for the weekend all pretty close to the bottom but not right on it. I know of many boats that fished this way for halibut on the weekend and caught their limt.

Ditch the flasher. Not required for mooching nooks deep. Way more trouble than it's worth. In fact, even trolling, I am done with flashers unless I need it to give the lure action, like with a hoochie. I might run a flasher, but it is clipped to the downrigger cable, not on my line.

Keta,
I am going to go out on the Blitz Friday for Hali's.
Capt. Mike said it would be Ok to bring my salmon rod in case we limit early on Butts. I just got one of those big Fish Flashes. Now you are saying not to use them. Could you describe the set-up for me. I have a Daiwa 8'6" Eliminator (Stick) with 300 yds. of 65lb. Tuf-line loaded on a Penn 419 reel. I sure would like to get a chinook too. Any thing would be helpful. Thanks for any reply. Tom

I was at the Rock Pile with Puffin on Saturday and we did great on the nooks with a halibut spreader, 2lbs of lead, 2 8# circle hooks one a purple label herring. We caught 5 Halibut (38-58") and 4 nooks from 25 to 42 lbs all on the same rig drifting and bouncing bottom.

Hummingbird,

Mooching leader tied to the bead chain of a mooching (banana) weight, main line tied to other end of mooching weight. Nothing else.
