Anybody up for a tuna run tomorrow? Running out of Depoe at 0500 on channel 78.

WP, Jerry, anyone?

Rod, you need to get out on the Pile with the dory! Chinook fishing is automatic, we were releasing chinook that didn't meet our standards.

It's early but the forecast is shaping up for late in the week and I'm asking if I can run to Depoe on Sat. before Ifishstock.

Rod, man, I just walked in the door from three days of fishing and I'm beat. Did three days of salmon and Saturday to the "Ranch." No way I could make it back to Depoe in the morning.

My engine has developed a knock, in the upper end I think. Sounds like it might be in the valve train? But I haven't had time to work on it yet.

My opinion is, that it is a little to early to go yet. I think that one week of good weather could make a big difference on the tuna. The water was going up one degree a day at Newport and moving closer to shore each day. I was told that the "Irish" had 25 fish Sat. at 40 miles and talked to a commercial guy selling at the dock. His came at 40 miles. Probably some closer however?

The guys are right about the pile, took 18 for three days, all kings. However, the troll fleet is scooping them fast, about 25 boats on them and each day got a little harder than the previous.

If I can get the motor in shape I am thinking tuna, end of the week. I need one more halibut run for the freezer, than tuna.

Good luck tomorrow,
Jerry

Rod,
Did you go out this morning? Results man! I am heading out in the A.M. from Depoe. Plan to leave about 0530 or so. Tuna is the target with salmon as a back-up plan, maybe! Come on Rod...I need a running mate in the morning!

WP.........I will most likely be running in the morning also!!! I have a slight chance that I can't...........but I am 90 % there. I will be leaving around 5:00 and will monitor 78. Not a bunch of info to go on, but then again its more fun if you find em yourself. If not, I will salmon slaughter.

None-the-less I will talk to you in the a.m.

Looks like I'll be doing Salmon/bottom fishing combo in the morning tomorrow. I wasn't planning on running out tomorrow but just got reminded that I'd promised a trip for a co-worker for then. Wednesday I have work committments that I must attend to. Thursday, will have to take a look at what's happening offshore and where the fish are found by then.

Spoke with a commercial tuna fisherman this morning who came in last night. He said they were 40 miles off of Depoe Bay, sounds like around the W125 00, N45 00 corner. I REALLY don't want to make that far of a run out since it costs soooo much in gas on the boat.

Well, I'd wait on the tuna for awhile just like Jerry(TWB) said above.

Made a new long distance tuna run record today of over 60+ miles one way.

And the results............................ WE ONLY GOT 1 TUNA!!!!!

That's right folks, 1 !!! We had 3 "drive by's" and that was it. We ran out to 61 degrees, nada. We ran out to tuna town, nada. We then proceeded to run out to where there were 4 tuna trollers working and that's where we finally found some blue water and a temp break from 59 to 61. Hit one real quick then slow with sporadic drive bys. Then of course, after traveling over 60 miles out, we needless to say felt the need to start our return.

The trip wasn't a total loss though as we were able to stop in 270 ft. of water southwest of Depoe and put 2 nooks and 2 ho's in the bucket in less than an hour. We also released 1 coho, 1 undersized nook, and an approx. 23 inch nook.

So that's the scoop folks. Nice day on the blue though. Very smooth run out and a decent run back in. Return trek took 3 hours to get back to within 10 miles!

Went to Garibaldi the day before and got some nice nooks/ho's, bottom fish, and 16 crabs.

I've got some parts on order for the dory and once they get in I need to get back to "work". hehehe

Rod, what a trip!!! I might have to rethink my statement, might be more than a week.

Two weeks ago Sea Jypzee catches them at 8 miles, and now there nowhere to be found?? Where did they go to, Astoria, Westport, Canada?

The wind turns to south this week until Saturday then back to NW. Lets hope that will help bring them back.

Guess it's back to halibut and salmon then.

Thanks for the report Rod. So sorry that it was such a bad trip. Marty and WP are going tomorrow. Marty said he would post up a report. Hope they find some.

BOE, No. I took the Trophy out. Would've taken the dory but the leaking water lands on the belts and then proceeds to be splashed all over the engine............and we know what problem that creates!

Sorry about the dead boat trip on Friday. We'll get out again before the end of tuna season.......and we'll wait till they're in close!

TWB, the only thing that was "bad" about the trip was the 3 hour ride home. Going out was o.k. because your excited about fishing and you stop every so often to fish but that drive home is the worst. We ended the day on a great note though getting our limits of salmon. No complaints here. It was a beautiful day on the water.

Hope your boat checks out o.k. I'll be piecing the dory back together this week again and trying to get out Thursday somewhere.

Thanks everyone for the advice on Newport salmon.

I just checked the SST from yesterday and this is EXACTLY what we found to be true. We hit 58-59 degree water out near "61 degrees", which increased to 60 as we went out towards tuna town and then it dropped to 59 until we reached the 60 mile mark where it jumped rapidly from 59-61. I wish this SST would've been available before we made the trip!

Corrirod,

Would you mind giving a link or the URL for that SST website you posted?

I don't think I've seen that one before. Don't know if you've seen this one before or not, but check out

http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/PSB/EPS/SST/contour.html, then Washington/Oregon coast. There's several pretty good viewing options but it only gets updated every 2 or 3 days.

Would you also provide coords for Tuna Town? How far is it from 61 degrees?

Would love to make it tomorrow but can't swing it... perhaps later in the week. Please post a report.

Thanks much, and good luck.

This sucks! I schedualed a tuna trip out of Depoe for the 9th on a charter. I sure don't want to go 60 miles out. Dang it!

Bucky, I tried your link but it was down. I think I already have it though.

Here are some links to threads with all the great sites:

Favorite Salty Dog Links

Weather Forecasting Links

Also, the coordinates for Tuna town are simple:

125 / 45

THere is warm water north of tuna town to be had. If I wanted to fish tuna, I would run northwest out of Depot.

In looking at last evenings terrafin shot, if I were going to make the run out for tuna at this point, I'd head to the area of W124 50, N45.06 and work that area hard. It's a long haul though, but looks like where the best warm water is, with any kind of decent break.

I'm still gonna sit on my hands till it moves in a bit closer. Give it a week and see if this S-SW swell keeps up. They'll move in closer if it does.

The other good note on this trip was I "de-virginized" a friend on tuna. He's hooked and it only took "1" lone fish to do it!
