Default 7.62x39 Carbine?

Does anyone know if there is a company making a carbine chambered in 7.62x39 that is not based on the AK receiver design? Kel Tec makes a small ( nearly bullpup looking) carbine chambered in 7.62 NATO and one can find bolt actions in 7.62x39.

Someone must have a lighter more handy carbine on the market chambered for this......right?

Nato 308 winchester is used in the m1a, you can get these in a 16 inch barrel model called the scout, and then put a bullpup stock on it for a very short and light unit with a lot of power. I hunt with my m1a scout and have been researching putting a 1 X 6 swarovski scope on it in order to have quick shot ability for close in brush, but magnification when I need it. I think the 308 is a great deer and elk cartridge as long as you don't plan on making shots past 250 yards. I've missed more chances at elk because I couldn't get my gun up fast with open sights, hoping the 1 X 6 cures that problem

This wouldn’t be for hunting. It would be.....insurance. Must be an autoloader.

Basically something along this line (although not quite so Delta Force). I’d like not to go 7.62 NATO or 5.56 mike mike. The first is too darn full power for something small, both are cost prohibitive and are often difficult to find. Not so much with the AK round.

If Ruger made the Mini 14 chambered for the AK round it would pretty much be exactly what I am after.

Ruger Mini-30.

Never fired one though. HuntnFish is pretty savvy on mini-14s, I'm sure he could offer some suggestions about getting a mini-30 to shoot well. The only mini-14 I owned was a scattergun.

regards, aw

Thanks AW! Guess I missed that Ruger model.

And.......voila

Looks like the piggy bank is going to get tapped. AKs might be cheaper but they're so darn clunky.

And...there are AR15 variants in 7.62 x 39.

Colt even made some complete ARs this way, but it's been awhile.

Lighter and more handy that an AK-47? The Kalashnikov action is as reliable as it gets and available in several different variants now. You can lighten the battle configuration with a synthetic stock and there are even some sporters on the market if you want to get away from the "assault weapon" look. If all your looking for is a something for "insurance", the AK-47 can be had A LOT cheaper than any AR-15 platform. So much so that you'll be able to afford a case or two of military ball ammo to feed it with. It'll also chamber and fire EVERY TIME.

Not that I don't like AR's and the like, but for economy and reliability the AK is pretty hard to beat.

You’re probably correct. The AK and Mini-30 are probably similar in weight and I could save 300 clams. More savings if I went SKS. I just find both rifles are clunky with too much superfluous stuff everywhere. They are good machines obviously and would probably be fine to have. But all those I have handled have unbelievably horrid triggers. I just like the fit and feel feel of M1 and M14 rifles and the M1 carbine. If the Mini-30 is similar in size and handles similar to a M1 Carbine that is what I am looking for.

I never knew it was offered. The modern true assault weapon configuration is just not exactly something that suits me.

Thanks for the input everyone.
