Re: Coast Guard Numbers
Cell Phones are OK, but they are no sustitute for a VHF radio. The Coast Guard has no way of using a radio direction finder to locate a vessel that calls them with a cell phone. Last weeekend they had quite a few calls from guys on cell phones lost in the fog. The only way they could locate these boats , that also didn't have gps capabilities was to fly over them with a helo, and have the guy in the boat tell them when the helo was directly overhead. A lot of wasted time and aircraft fuel, just to locate the vessel.
