Yep!, Team Sea Lion... We Crown Kings...
Look for the rest of the story later... Had to reel in another big bright hog of a king and about 4 more Halibut... I think they had a copy of the regs...
Oh, and some bottom fish and ... well, more later

By the way, it's tough to hoist 90# of fish in the air when they are lobsided... I should have caught a 60# King to balance out the Halibut...

Default 8/1 Newport BFB and Nooks at the Pile

Aboard the Sea Lion with Mr. Fisherman and Drifty.

We only managed one Halibut, a 50 incher, but had a great day on salmon, limiting chinooks to 30 pounds. We also had 3 lings, two rockfish and a hake, mooching right on the bottom. Lots of big salmon and bfb caught at the pile.

We didn't get an albacore for the slam, but we did manage seven species: Chinook, Coho, Halibut, Hake, Yelowtail Rockfish, Lingcod, and a Canary Rockfish.

Thanks for the ride Ray, one of my best days of fishing.

The harpoon broke on that fish. I think I hit the spine. We got him in with a baby gaff.

Ray,

Good to run into you at the Pile on Sunday. The Sea Lion is looking great. Before we left, a sea lion pup came up to the boat, and I tried to shoo it your way so that it could find the correct Mother Ship.

Here is a amazing finish to our day. When we pick up to leave, we had a couple of tangled poles, and they are also wrapped around the downrigger ball. We pull it all up, get it unmangled and end up with a stray piece of line still hanging in the water, and it is tugging back. We look at our other gear, and we had already brought in and unhooked 2 sets of terminal tackle, so we figure we snagged somebody's line and we are going to yard in whatever is at the end and get somebody's fish. We work the thing in by hand, and there is a 22 lb. Chinook attached. We net it and bring it in, look in the net, and it is my terminal gear from the triple we got first thing when the rod holder blew up on me and took my rod and reel to the deep! No mistaking the tackle, I tie up my own RSK's with some green tubing and Partridge hooks. Just plain amazing, we were back about where we started, and we must have run the downrigger wire across the broken line hanging in the water. Wish my pole and reel had been at the other end, but at least I got the fish out of the deal ( I was a little ashamed it was only 22 lb's after the way it snatched my rod with ease  - lighter drag next time).

Orca, That pup followed us around all day, thanks
EdSr, yep, harpooned twice and broke my new stick. Bummer. It is repaired now and ready for another. I upped the "baby Gaff" that I used to bring in Charlie's 70# flattie. Some fish just have bigger attitudes I guess.
Kurt, I agree. This was one of my best days on the water. You and Drifty were about the best crew a boat could hope for. Thanks for spending a day on my boat getting it bloody.
I am looking forward to seeing the pic of you in the cockpit with all the blood sloshing around.
I hope next time you guys will bag your flattie. But the fish we did get were anything but a second prize. What a day.

Day 2 was a bust. We decided to go for Tuna and it was just too rough.

Day 3 we headed back out on the pile and Hogemin put on a clinic. He boated his 2 Salmon and a couple of Halibut to boot. Drifty lost a very nice fish right at the boat. I hate it when that happens. I got plain lucky and caught another nice fish in the low 30# class that thought he weighed 50#. He just did not want to come to the boat. Now I need a new set of drags in my 6301.
We boated several nice rock fish, three very nice Chinook and about 8 to 10 Halibut. Too bad we had to let them all go. Only 1 was short.
I sure enjoyed this week after such a long dry spell. I look forward to this week too.

For those interested we caught fish on the North, middle and South Rock Pile. We fished between 170 and 240 feet of water and mooched on the drift with 10 ounce mooching sinkers rigged with an RSK and a two hook setup with a green bead. Just like my buddy John taught me.

We saw lots of trawlers Saturday. They were spanking the Salmon. MAybe that is why it was so much work to find them, they were already in another boat.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Stay tuned for next weeks saga.
Same fish time,
Same fish channel.
All fishing,
All the time....

By the way, that's Drifty with another fish on behind me holding that hog.
A day that I will long remember.
You kind of get spoiled when the fishing is that good.
