Sharks like halibut too!
We were out at the Ranch Friday, and just as a buddy of mine got his fish up to the boat, a shark took two bites out of it. Not nibbles either, bites. I didn't see it myself, but I understand it was about an 8'er. Fellow Ifisher Silver Eagle saw the fish too, back at the docks.
Anyone else have this problem? Anybody ever lose a salmon to a shark? Seems like it'd be pretty easy for them to target halibut on the way up. Any suggestions, or is it just the luck of the draw?

I've seen sharks take chunks out of albacore and yellowfin tuna, and seals take bonita and salmon and leave you the head. It aint Disneyland out there, Nemo better watch his "fins".

Re: Sharks like halibut too!
Last Halibut season out of Garabaldi, I hooked into a shark droping the gear down, but never had one bother any of our halibut, even with them thrashing on the surface.
We did have 2 blue's take the tail off of 2 of our albies last tuna outing, not much of a fight left in the tuna with no tail.....

Last year tuna fishing out of Newport...one bite and all that was left was the tooth scraped head of the once fresh fighting tuna.

Re: Sharks like halibut too!
I've seen our toothy friends take Salmon, Halibut, Tuna, and even Marlin on the way up. (The last one was in Mexico.) Just be glad we don't have huge Barracuda or Wahoo to mess with the catch. Their treatment of a large skip bait would make you think some scuba diver went after it with a machete. Clean cuts. I sure as hell would like to catch a Wahoo, though. -D
p.s.. is it me, or are we having an exceptional shark year?!

Re: Sharks like halibut too!
Oh yes, sharks like struggling flat fish. Had one that lost his back half to a shark, wouldn"t make the 32" minium length limit after that little bite.
Then the blood brings all of his buddys and they hang around your boat waiting for another free meal. I pick up the gear and go set up for another drift.

Re: Sharks like halibut too!
I found out that another friend of mine caught
a 5' blue during the June halibut season when he was dropping down a big sardine. Shark hit it about half way down & the proceeded to get it's tail wrapped up in the leader. Might be fun to target these fish.

Are Blue Sharks any good to eat?
I don't care to mess with them if they aren't useful for something more valuable than fertilizer.

Re: Sharks like halibut too!
I've been sharked on the way up, way in, way back, way close, way down, way everywhere -- I hate those blue sharks -- They have cost me a lot of tackle, including two Yo-Zuri tuna divers. Not to mention they don't taste very good, in my opinion.
In June I had one circling the boat at the Ranch that was so close it was beginning to get me concerned he would munch my halibut. I proceeded to jab him with the top side of the harpoon about five times -- still wouldn't leave me alone. So, now he was as ticked with me, as I was with him. So, I saw Gregotis off my starboard and tossed a fresh piece of meat over by him -- no more shark -- for me anyway  Well, actually it wasn't Gregotis, but it was another boat. I know, I'm mean.

Re: Sharks like halibut too!
Blue sharks taste a little like cardboard. Clip 'em off at the boat, and catch 'em again until they leave you alone. -D
