Default 8/1 Newport Report

Fished Friday with Gregotis at the Northern part of the Rockpile. Started with halibut. Greg got a 45" and I finally ended up with a 33". I had silvers following my halibut rig back to the boat so Greg tied on a Nordic and jigged up a nice 12lb chinook. I caught my halibut and it was time to concentrate on salmon. Ifishers on the radio were reporting GOOD luck on chinook by mooching whole herring about 12 cranks off the bottom. We used 8oz mooching sinkers, 6' leader and whole blue lable herring. We just drifted with the current in about 180' of water and had three more chinooks in about an hour, from 12 to 25lbs. We ended the day with a double header. Only had to release two wild silvers to get our chinook. Many of the fish we caught had several blue and purple sized herring in them.

Sunless, those with the purple herring are mine and I will come over first thing in the morning to pcik them up. man, I thought they were gone forever when they stole that bait.

Great Day on the water and a good report for beginners like me. Mooching or Jigging, how much lead did you have to use in 180' of water to get near or just off the bottom? I didn't know there was another way to catch salmon. Do you have to find a school of silvers first and then get below them with heavy weights?

I must give that a try next time.

Those herring are long gone Snapshot! We were able to get away with 8ozs of lead because the ocean was calm and ther was little drift (current/wind). The Nordic was around 4oz. It all depends on water depth and the drift. As far as finding the fish, h2o temp was the key... 50 degrees and warmer. Generally speaking, silvers were closer to the surface and chinooks are deeper.

That was one of the better weekends of fishing I've had. This time I didn't even have to hook fish for you Sunless, the fishing was so good you could actually catch your own this time. Sat. we took home another 5 chinook and 1 silver but no halibut.
