Default Tuna Charter Recommendations- 8/14-8/21

I have my brother in-law from Jersey arriving in town and want to get a tuna charter trip together.

Anyone have info on best captains/boats and port choice. Prefer Depoe Bay area. Thanks for the help.

My wife and I went out on the Irish a couple of weeks ago. Good captain that definitely wanted to put some fish in the boat. The deckhand was great, but didn't know that much about tuna fishing. Plus, there was no ice. It was a great trip, but, if I was spending the money, I would go with a trip on the black rocket. That guy loves to fish.

Slimfish,

I prefer Depoe Bay area also. So did the movie; One flew over the coo coos nest". Maybe that's why I prefer it.

Seriously though you didn't mention whether you want to go for bottom fish or for salmon. There are several 6 pack boats in Depoe Bay that are armed with hydraulic down riggers and that can be an advantage for chinook and sometimes coho when they are running deep.

Six pack boats also consistently catch a higher percentage of salmon.

Dockside Charters has several 6 pack boats and are all excelent skippers with my personal favorite probably being Loren on the Affair. But all of the six pack boats there are quality. They also have a big boat (50' delta) with captain Lars at the helm and he will work as hard as anybody at catching you fish.

If you were to pick a Tradewinds boat my overwhelming choice would be the Tacklebuster (43' delta). Very professional skipper (Jeurgan Turner) and crew (Carl). Quality tackle and boat. Carl knows the difference and importance of wild fish and is handeling them accordingly.

And then as mentioned there is the "rocket". I have never fished with him but know plenty that have. If speed, dry suits and catching fish is the name of your game, there you go.

I'm not sure how much room there is on that boat for moving around , but I know Bill Monroe had a blast on on it yesterday on their "grandslam" run. Would imagine you will read about it in the Oregonian. I think it is on the NASA website also.

Dano

PS> Salmon/bottomfish combo trips are available also.

Whoops! Didn't notice the word tuna untill after I posted.

Well I guess there is info for you or anyone else that wants to do bottom fish and/or salmon.

I'd have to think about that one for awhile but the Tacklebuster would be a good choice for a big boat and so would the Enterprise.

The Enterprise with captain Dave DeBeloy is at least 50' and he does some over nighters for tuna. He has also been in the US Coast Guard and I believe he is still in the Coast Guard auxilliary.

Then there is the Black Rocket that will get ya out there to the tuna grounds in a big hurry.

Dan

I would suggest The blitz out of Newport. Mike seems to be very knowlable and works hard to get you in the tuna
