Report in from Depoe Bay
Well, the Sea Jypzee left with 6 onboard, (plus myself for 7 total) at 05:30 this morning heading for halibut heaven!!
We started out fishing the north end of the rock pile, and picked up one keeper there. After a few empty drifts, decided to pull the gear and make the rest of the run on out to the Ranch, where we completed the "L" on the boat.
Sea Jypzee came into Depoe Bay today 7 for 7. The ocean was nice, the weather was nice, the company was nice (between a couple of them puking).
I even ended up handlining one in (the biggest one of course  ) It got under the boat and the line caught in the prop, rudder gear. I got ahold of the line with the handle to the net and grabbed it (didn't figure the fish was still there), and sure enough it was still on...just ended up handlining it in. Painful with no gloves!!
Met up with the Black Rocket, at the docks who completed a GRAND SLAM for the day. Will allow him to tell his own story.
On the menu for tomorrow is a fresh run at some Tuna for Woody and his family.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
Nancy, I just knew you would take the limits today and I had to work. I am so envious.
Uh, I am a little concerned as this beautiful phote is eveidence that could be used againt you and the fearsom crew. Looks like you took this picture last Thursday not today. Well, I can tell by looking at the angle of the sun in the photo and also the date printed in the lower righty corner July 24,2003. Hide the picture from the cops and stay inside, off the water for at least two weeks. By then the cops will give up and forget.
Nice catch and lots of good eating. Did anyone on board know how to fillet them flatties?
How far out is the chicken ranch and rock pile? Can I run out there with only 35 gallons of fuel on board. I think I use about 7 gallons an hour at full throttle. That's about 48 MPH on a flat river or lake. Probably about 18 to 20 miles an hour on a nice slick ocean day. Yep, its a river boat for sure.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
ACK!!! I wonder why my camera did THAT. It's not supposed to do that. Hmmm guess I oughta check the date on it.
Yes, it was today, 8/1/03 that we got those fish.
The rock pile is about 12-15 miles straight out from Newport. The chicken Ranch is about 30 miles out of Newport, or 35 miles from Depoe Bay.
I know how to felet them, but DepoeBay Dan was there and did mine...Woody and family were there as well so his wife did a few as well. We got'em all taken care of.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
Don't let her fool ya Snapshot. It was last Thursday and I was there. She had the date wrong on her watch also. I was the "lookout" for the fish & game cops.
No seriously now, those digital cameras really are hard on batteries (that's why I bought rechargables) and I am continuously taking mine out and recharging them. Every time I do it the date gets reset to 2000 or so. I just quit bothering to reset my date.
Sure makes it look like I caught a lot of fish in the year 2000 though!
Nancy if I were you, I would inactivate the date feature in the picture because I think they look better without it. You can always click on properties and it will tell you the date it was taken.
Just my penney and a half.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
Snapshot - IMHO, I wouldn't run out to the chicken ranch/ rockpile, or anywhere out of site of the shore in my 19ft NorthRiver Sportster. Too shallow a vee (abusive to vertebrae and welds), not enough prow (open to the double dunk / pearl syndrome), and not enough gas to risk it.
Not to say I haven't seen unworthier boats out there (open guided sleds, hmmmm), but I'd feel better in something bigger and made for the open ocean, preferably with lots of prow, freeboard, flotation, and self bailing; two power plants of equal horsepower also reassurring. Say a Boston Whaler Conquest, SeaSport, Osprey, Orca... I digress into mental self-abuse.
I feel comfortable at B10 but there are days when the wind kicks up and the rip is running that you have to run at speeds just below plane to keep that low NR bow higher in the air. I imagine the ocean would be just as unforgiving, just steeper cresting swells.
Looking forward to the threepeat! It's Rags turn now.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
And it should be noted that Crambone is no longer a Halibut Virgin. Now, all we gotta do is get him the smell of tuna and he'll be all set.
Both Crambone and Finclipped were with me (from ifish) and they both performed great on the salt. (although finclipped did appear to be a little one or two times I saw him).

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
OK Nancy
I need to set you straight Chumbone er I mean crambone was not the Halibut virgin, that was finclipped But I was the chummin dude but I did hang in there and boat my own fish, and the second one I did have some help from Aaron and you with the hand line deal . Just wanted to set the record straight, but yes I am still a Tuna virgin so maybe the black rocket can take care of that this friday. I want to thank Nancy for the great trip and company. I also got to meet several Ifishers, DepoebayDan, Wildhawg, UG, Finclipped (who is a real funny guy, looks like you're on empty dude!)Woody the mechanic and his wife who took care of the halibut for me and a few others. Also Capt Kujo came over to the Sea Jypzee in the morning and introduced himself, can't wait to get out there with him. Thanks again Nancy hope to do it again soon.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
I don't know about the courts would accept a lame excuse such as a wrong date listed in the camera. IF they do, I suppose Dan and some of the others could use the same excuse on their pucch cards. Uh, honest officer, I caught them today and looked in my camera to see what day of the month it is.
Dan, thanks again for the jigs and I can hardly wait to come back to use them but with the Istock party next week, and then buoy 10 should be coming on, I may not get back your way until the Salmon are done. That will be about Christmas as I chase them up rivers too. I may see you on the Kalama though if the tidewaters produce for you, I would be happy to run up with my boat to help extract some of those fish from the water.
Great story Nancy, it still needs a little work.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
Crambone - Oops, ok, ya you were the chummer....and a great job of it you did!!
As for Tuna today - Was a no-go!!
We took off from Depoe as scheduled, on what appeared to be reasonable ocean conditions. The further offshore we got, the worse the ocean became. At one point, a series of waves hit the boat and knocked the anchor off the bow and down it went. Thankfully the line caught in the windlass and stopped it...but it was REAL interesting trying to get that thing hauled back up and secured again in 8' seas with wind chop on top of it. Was VERY crappy.
Shortly after that was resolved, I turned and saw Woody, his wife and son all looking somewhat on the side....I said if it got any worse, I was going to call it...well Woody's wife decided she'd had enough and wanted to call it at that point, which was fine by me.
Best speed at that point was tuna troll, and we were in 54 degree water still. I just couldn't see going any further out in possibly building seas still, and risk injury for fish,(even TUNA) so we headed back in.
We got back into Depoe Bay, dropped Woody's wife off, picked up some herring and went out for some Salmon. We even had to work hard at the Salmon, but we put 2 in the boat for Andy (Woody's son). He caught his first Salmon, (a keeper Coho), then turned around and beat that one by getting a nice Chinook.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
Nancy, how do you know that was today as there is no date in the corner of the picture. With an early start and rought seas, you could have lost a day. NIce pricure and I love getting a newbee into their first fish and especially a chinook.
Way to hang in there an not to give up on a bad day at sea.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
Nancy, thanks again for a great trip on Friday. I was able to catch my first Halibut and enjoyed every minute of the day. The Ocean was great and the Sea Jypsea is a great fish catcher. I also enjoyed fishing with fellow ifisher, Crambone, whom despite having a tough day of seasickness, never once complained and was able to reel in a nice but! Nice fishing with you Tim. Good luck this weekend.
Also had the pleasure of meeting several other ifishers at the dock, and if I remember correctly they were DepoeBayDan, Uglygreen, Woody, & Wildhawg. Seems like a close community down there and everyone was very friendly. Makes me kind of miss the small town feel.
Nancy was nice enough to invite me back for a rendevous with Tuna on Sunday, but conditions were too rough. I will have to wait another day to catch my first tuna. At least I am no longer a halibut virgin.
Having been on sleep deprivation since Thursday, I was able to catch up on a little sleep today. Although I wasn’t going to pass up a Sunday tuna opportunity, I must have been tired as I slept 12 hours last night.
For anybody wondering, Nancy is a great captain and has a nose for the fish. She limited the boat despite having some rookies on board.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">I'll second that. Even though the seas were rough on the outside and we scrubbed the tuna trip , she went all out to get us into some fish. As you can see by the pictures, my son Andy got his first salmon. Thanks to Nancy's hard work.

Re: Report in from Depoe Bay
Hey Willierower
I can't be chummin on friday because you and Rob WILL take pictures and I am not going to give you guy's the pleasure of that
I am taking the Motorhome down on Thursday so If you and Rob want to stay in it also and not have to drive down real early there is enough room and I am going to stay Friday. Nancy is going to come down after work on Friday and stay the night and maybe saturday too! Rob said that he would like to, so I will get with you in the next day or two and confirm.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Uhhhh, I am? But I have to work this coming Sat/Sunday. Sorry hun, but maybe next time.
Finclipped - Awww, thanks. I just like to get people onto the fish. The catching them is their job.
Woody - But I'm not done with you yet my friend. You and Andy still gotta get that trip to tuna town, and with the seas and weather shapping up this week, things oughta be looking much better in a week or so. Perhaps will be ready for a mid-week run at'em next week sometime. Will see how close in they move.
willierower - If you want blackmale pictures of Cramchum, just give me a call. Of course they may cost you a bit, but wow have I got some when his..ummm back was turned.

Way to go Sea Jypzee!
We didn't have any chummers on board with Team Pilsbury or perhaps we might have gotten closer to a grand slam on Sat. The water was gettin sloppy.
