Photo Contest #18: Americana
Nalu's entry in Contest #16 inspired me to do a contest thread on Americana. What is this? Well, think Norman Rockwell, baseball, football, apple pie, Barns, pheasant hunts, flea markets, carshows... I could go on, but Nalu had the idea. Judging will rely on creativity, theme adherence, and photographic skill. This will not be an easy contest to win (or judge) so I urge all of you to compose and crop your shots well. Black and white will be judged on equal footing with color - just make sure the choice enhances the photo. Express emotion, introspection, beauty, pride, nostalgia, or whatever else Americana means to you.
You all know the rules: see the Sticky.
The contest ends Sunday night Thanksgiving weekend, so there will be lots of opportunity for family holiday shots as well.
So to kick things off, I'm going to post a couple shots taken with a Canon 5D 24-105 f4L and 70-200 F2.8L on auto settings, cropped and color corrected.. . now that you know your competition, give me your best!
Entry #1
Waiting for a Cloudbreak
Entry #2
The Only Girl on the Team
Good luck and have fun.

Re: Photo Contest #18: Americana
This photo just sorta happened, its my girl Emma on this years opening week. She is looking to her left becouse a rooster is clucking around in a ditch 50yds from us and its driving her nuts, she is striking a almost false point only becouse her feet are sore, it was our seventh day in a row. I dont know how americana this picture is, German dog, Italian shotgun and Chinese birds, but being a FORD guy that old truck is about Americana as it gets!

Re: Photo Contest #18: Americana
I was about to TTT this, but then I thought... what could I do that would keep this thread near the top without Stickying it? I think I have an answer.
Rather than wait to post you two entries until the end, for whatever the reason (I can think of several), go ahead and post two entry shots for fun. As you get better shots, go ahead and edit your original post's entries.
There is no rule that states your entries cannot be changed in-contest. I'm sure lot's of you have found file photos but aren't posting them yet for chance of getting a better one on Thanksgiving... that's 2.5 weeks away. Let's make this fun. Post em up!

Taken with an old digital camera I no longer have. Concord EyeQ 3103 on auto setting. Not cropped, color richened up 5 points from original, contrast up 5 as well.

Second picture. The mighty Spruce Goose with a replica of the Wright Flyer in the lower left. Same camera as the other picture. Same settings. No modifications to picture. Wish I had my Canon I now own to take these.

Re: Photo Contest #18: Americana
Americana the beautiful...

Shot on auto setting with a bit of cropping.
Americana the not so beautiful, but Americana just the same!
Two different sides of what I consider Americana, but they both make this country boys heart, that's stuck in the city, ache just the same.

Re: Photo Contest #18: Americana
With three judges placing 30 possible points per photo (Creativity, Theme Adherence, and Photo Quality 10 pts each), the highest score any photograph could collect would be 90 points.
All three judges agreed which were in the top three, with the highest collective score the winner.
The Envelope Please...
First Place: JHoyt's Nothin' runs like a Deere!: 28, 28, 27 à 83pts
Second Place: Pete's Dreams: 21, 25, 25 à 71pts
Third Place: Fishstik's Emma On Point: 19, 22, 28 à 69pts
Fourth Place: Dr Strangelove's The Only Girl on the Team: 29pts
Other photos nominated were: Spazz's Kid in Pickup: 25pts, Bassfishingnw's Whiskey: 24pts, Mr Bones4's Windmills: 22pts, Oregon Boater's TBall stop action: 22pts, Ryan Pultz Fireworks: 20pts
Thanks to the Judges: Ni!, Maddy's Daddy, and Frogpond
This was a challenging contest, and I am very happy with the quality photos entered. Great Job!
Congrats JHoyt! I'm sure some popcorn will be coming.
Next contest: taking suggestions. PM me. I'll announce this weekend.
Thanks, Doc
